Fire up your core with these easy but effective yoga asanas

Maintaining a strong core is an often-ignored but truly essential health hack. It plays a central role in nearly every movement your body makes. It helps maintain the perfect posture, increase your balance, reduces injury risk and more. But did you know that a gym membership isn't the only way to get a strong core? Even yoga can help. Riya Vyas, founder of Unalome Yoga, shared three asanas you can try to fire up your core easily and effectively. Postures like Boat Pose (Navasana) and Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana), featured in this reel, engage the deep abdominal muscles, support spinal alignment, and improve posture. Variations of the boat pose further challenge the body, enhancing endurance and muscular control. Unlike high-impact workouts, yoga strengthens the core while minimising strain on the joints. Watch the video here: A post shared by Riya Vyas | Yoga & wellness expert (@riyavyasyoga) Boat Pose (Navasana): It is a core-strengthening yoga posture that builds balance and stability by engaging the abdominal muscles. It also helps improve concentration and tones the hips and spine. Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana): Setu Bandhasana, or Bridge Pose, strengthens the back, glutes, and hamstrings while gently opening the chest and spine. It also helps calm the mind and relieve stress and mild depression. Riya tells us that in a world increasingly dominated by sedentary routines and screen time, maintaining core strength is more important than ever. 'A strong core is not just about toned abs—it forms the foundation for overall stability, balance, and functional movement. It keeps your spine and organs protected. Yoga, with its mindful approach and holistic postures, offers a powerful and sustainable way to build core strength.' She adds, 'A strong core is key to preventing lower back pain, improving athletic performance, and enhancing daily movement—from lifting groceries to standing for long hours. It also supports better breathing and digestion, making it vital for overall well-being.'

13-yr-old's testimony gets mom's killer life in jail 11 yrs after murder in Malad highrise

Mumbai: The testimony of a girl, then aged 13, secured the conviction and life imprisonment sentence for 31-year-old Arvind Gupta who killed her mother Shagufta Khan (32) and fled with Rs 80 lakh jewellery in 2014. Shagufta was the wife of alleged bookie Sonu Jalan. Gupta was also found guilty of attempting to murder the girl and sentenced to six years' jail. Both sentences will run concurrently. The deposition by Riya Jalan Khan detailed not only finding her mother with a slit throat when she and her then seven-year-old sister returned from school to their Malad (W) residence on Nov 11, 2014, but also Gupta's attempt to kill her as he fled the scene with Rs 80 lakh jewellery. Critically, she identified Gupta, who worked at a mobile shop owned by Khan's friend Siraj Shaikh, as the killer. "…it is evident that the prosecution has established that the death of Shagufta falls in the category of homicidal death and the accused is the author of the has proved that the accused committed robbery by entering the house of the informant," additional sessions judge A S Salgar said. In the 65-page order copy, the judge refuted the defence submission that Riya was tutored. "...there is an impress of truth in the evidence of the child stated the entire incident as mentioned in the FIR. There is no lacuna in the version of such a witness," the judge said. Jalan was in Australia at the time of the murder. Riya told the court that on Nov 11, 2014, her sister Jia and she went to school with their driver, Arvind Devruskar, and returned home at 3.05pm. Upon arriving at their sixth-floor apartment at Rustomjee Riviera on Marve Road, they noticed the safety door open and the main door ajar. Entering the flat, they saw bloodstains in the hall. Jia remained near the entrance, while Riya followed the bloodstains towards her mother's bedroom. Riya knocked and called out to her mother, but heard a man's voice asking who it was. When the man opened the door, Riya recognised him as Gupta, who frequently visited their house. He was holding a knife and attempted to press it against her neck. Riya ran to her bedroom and locked the door from the inside. After some time, she opened her bedroom door and saw Gupta carrying a bag and a bloodstained knife. He dropped the knife and left the flat. Riya ran to her mother's bedroom and found her lying in a pool of blood with her throat cut. There was also an injury on her chest and an empty jewellery box. Riya called her driver, father and aunt from her mother's phone. Devruskar rushed upstairs and saw Shagufta's body. Riya told him that Jia was missing. Devruskar found Jia with the building watchman Sunil Kamble. Gupta was arrested on Nov 13, 2014, from Kolkata. Public prosecutor Ratnavali Patil cited the evidence of 25 witnesses, including Riya, Sonu, Devruskar, and Kamble. Patil said the recovery of the ornaments at the accused's instance further strengthened their case. "The post-mortem report, confirmed by the medical officer's testimony, substantiated the victim's injuries, which were also proven by the prosecution. Additionally, CCTV footage served as corroborative evidence, showing the accused entering the society," he added.

14-year-old's testimony ‘reliable': Court sentences 34-year-old man to life imprisonment for murdering girl's mother 11 years ago

Taking into account the testimony of a 14-year-old girl, who saw her mother's killer in the house 11 years ago, a sessions court on Thursday convicted a 34-year-old man of murder and robbery and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Shagufta Khan, the wife of Sonu Jalan, an alleged bookie, was killed at their residence in Malad on November 11, 2014. The sessions court found Arvind Gupta alias Guddu guilty of charges, including murder, robbery, house-trespassing and attempt to murder Khan's daughter, who saw him at their house during the crime. Gupta had fled with diamond and gold jewellery worth over Rs 80 lakh. Additional sessions judge A S Salgar said the girl's testimony on the crime was 'reliable' and went 'unshattered' during the trial. On the day of the incident, the girl, Riya alias Aliya, and her younger sister Jiya, returned from school around 3.30pm. Riya told the court that she saw the security door and main door of their sixth floor apartment in a Malad high-rise open. When they entered, there were blood stains in the hall, leading up to their mother's bedroom. She told the court that she was going towards the bedroom, when she heard the door shut. She knocked on it and called out to her mother but heard a male's voice. She asked who it was, and a man came out. The girl told the court that she knew the man as he worked for her mother's friend, and had visited their house before to collect payment for mobile sets bought by her mother. He was holding a knife and tried to press her neck. She managed to rush out to her own bedroom and closed the door. After a few minutes, she peeped through the door and saw Gupta carrying a bag and a blood-stained knife. He threw the knife near the TV on the floor and went out of the flat. The girl rushed to her mother's bedroom and saw her lying in a pool of blood, with her throat slit. She also saw an empty jewellery box and an open cupboard. Her mother's phone was lying there and she immediately called the family driver, who had just dropped her and her sister home. She also called Jalan, who was in Australia, at that time. The police were then alerted. Gupta was arrested two days later from Kolkata. The girl's younger sister had rushed out of the house and was safe. During the trial, Gupta's lawyer Majeed Memon had submitted that his arrest was illegal and that the police had not properly recorded the 14-year-old's statement as it should have been in a question and answer format as she is a child witness. It was also submitted that the child could have been tutored. 'In the present case, there is an impression of truth in the evidence of the child witness. There is no reason as to why the court should not accept the evidence of the child witness if found competent to depose the fact and reliable one,' the court said. Additional public prosecutor Ratnavali Patil had submitted that the child's testimony was reliable and she had deposed in court clearly about the day of the incident. The court said that the child had no enmity with the accused and there was no reason for her to depose falsely. It also said the statement not being in a proper format cannot be a reason to acquit the accused. It also said that the FIR was recorded at home as the child could not have been expected to visit the police station. The court also relied on medical evidence, which showed that the victim had suffered 13 injuries, and CCTV footage of the building which showed Gupta entering and then exiting with a bag. While Gupta had said that he could not be tried for attempting to kill the child as she had not sustained any injury, the court said the intention was to kill her. It also said that while the accused had said that he was falsely implicated, he had not been able to show where he was if not at the flat on the day. Among the 25 witnesses was also Jalan, who deposed about the phone call from his daughter. The accused had also raised the point that the recovered jewellery was not produced before the court as Jalan had said that he had sold it off after it was returned to him. The court said that this also was not a ground which would favour the accused and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
