Enforcement officer lays tape measure on road to assess illegal parking, impresses netizens , Singapore News

A video of an enforcement officer using a measuring device on a car suspected of being illegally parked has tickled netizens and earned praise. In the minute-long clip shared by Facebook page on Friday (May 30), the officer — dressed in the uniform worn by Certis Cisco parking wardens — places a yellow tape measure along the road, parallel to a black car. The black car appears to have been parked illegally at Swanage Road, with its rear end seemingly obstructing the footpath. The enforcement officer then snaps a picture of the car from the front and walks back to the rear and inspects the tape measure. The post has garnered over 1,500 views and 200 comments, with netizens both amused by the situation and also impressed by the officer's diligence. "Imagine if you receive the letter of the summon: Dear xxx. Your vehicle was parked 0.1 cm out," wrote a Facebook user. "Professionalism at work," commended another. While some asked if the measure was necessary, others pointed out that the officer was simply making sure to collect evidence in case any car owner disputes their summons. According to the Road Traffic Rules, it is an offence to park in a manner which causes unnecessary obstruction to other road users, such as by blocking entrances/ exits or footways. It is also an offence to park or wait within six metres of any road intersection or junction. [[nid:712253]]

Driver ignores police, SCDF warnings to save burning car in McNair Road carpark

The public should follow the instructions of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and police at the scene of a fire for their own safety, said the police on May 2. This advice follows video footage of a man seemingly ignoring the instructions of the police and firefighters during a fire at the carpark of Block 111 McNair Road on May 1, at about 8pm. In a recording uploaded to the Facebook page, the police and firefighters can be heard shouting "don't drive" as he enters the car, which is parked beside a burning car. They yell at him to "go away" and "come out" of the vehicle. "Crazy," remarked the netizen who captured the footage, reacting to what appeared to be the man's attempt to save his car. "The driver of the car exited the parking lot and turned right towards SCDF officers, who were in the midst of setting up hoses in the carpark," said the police in a media statement. "A police officer intervened to knock on his car door to get his attention, and to direct him away from the ongoing SCDF operations," they added. According to the SCDF, the fire involved the engine compartment of a car in the open-air carpark. The blaze was extinguished using a water jet and no injuries were reported. Comments on the video were divided. Some praised the driver for the dangerous manoeuvre as he "did the right thing to create space" and prevent the fire from spreading. Others remarked that if the car had exploded, injuring him, the authorities would have to shoulder the blame despite their warnings.

Man braves flames to save car parked next to burning vehicle at McNair Road, Singapore News

What would you do if your car was next to a vehicle which was on fire? For one man, his first instinct was to save it. A video uploaded to Facebook group on Friday (May 2) showed a parked vehicle up in flames along McNair Road. A man then appears to get into the Honda Civic parked next to the burning vehicle, driving it away from the fire. This was despite warnings from Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and Singapore Police Force officers who could be heard in the video signalling and shouting for the man to "go away". A voice behind the camera could also be heard exclaiming, "Crazy fella". After the driver exits the parking lot and comes to a stop, police officers can be seen approaching the car, with one banging on the passenger-side door and telling the driver to "come out first". The video caption stated that the Honda Civic owner was allegedly not wearing any pants during the incident. In a response to AsiaOne's queries, SCDF said they were alerted to a fire at Block 111 McNair Road on May 1 at about 8pm. The fire involved the engine compartment of a car in the open-air carpark. SCDF extinguished the fire using a water jet. There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation. AsiaOne has reached out to the police for more information.
