Roanoke Police launch Summer Shield initiative
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – In an effort to reduce violent crime over the summer and this holiday weekend, the Roanoke Police Department has announced 'Operation Summer Shield.' RPD said this strategic initiative will be a 'sustained and coordinated' campaign including felony warrant apprehensions, targeted traffic enforcement, and proactive criminal interdiction. Law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service and members of Probation and Parole, will start by removing violent offenders and repeat criminals ahead of the summer holiday season with the execution of violent felony and high-risk warrants. RPD arrests five in connection to Market Street shooting Additionally, RPD will conduct downtown saturation patrols on Friday and Saturday nights during peak bar hours as part of this initiative and will implement high-visibility traffic enforcement to 'further deter criminal activity.' 'This joint enforcement with Virginia State Police Motors will include saturation patrols in high-crime areas, DUI enforcement, occupant safety checks, and reckless driving suppression.' Police said they hope to deter fights, weapons violations, and disorderly conduct in the city's busiest nightlife area. Codi alert issued for missing teenager in Roanoke
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The Virginia State Police has issued a CODI Alert for a missing teenager on behalf of the Roanoke Police Department on May 1. VSP said that 17-year-old Joseph Rodriguez-Cornelio was last seen around 2:30 a.m. on Thirlane Road Wednesday morning wearing gray sweatpants. He has brown hair, brown eyes, 5'6', and weighs around 200 pounds. Police believe he is possibly on foot, and there may be a threat to his health and safety. RPD K9 dies in line of duty
Roanoke – The Roanoke Police Department has announced the death of K-9 officer Knox, a German Shepard, after an incident in the early morning hours. It happened around 1:40 a.m. in the 3900 block of Melrose Ave NW, when officers saw a stolen vehicle at a gas station. Police attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver fled the scene. RPD would pursue until the vehicle became inoperable, with the chase ending around the 4200 block of Vermont Ave NW. At this point, the driver tried to flee the scene, and K9 Knox was released to bring him down. However, during the release, Knox was accidentally struck by the officer's car. He was immediately taken to Emergency Veterinarian Services but would later die from his injuries. The driver of the vehicle has been identified by police as 44-year-old Timothy Darnell Bryant, and he is still at large. He's wanted on charges of grand larceny, felony alluding and felony hit and run. However, a passenger in the vehicle was arrested. Police identified her as 34-year-old Stephini Salama. She remained at the scene and has been charged with failure to identify to law enforcement. K9 Knox joined RPD in May 2023, as a Narcotics Detection and Patrol Apprehension K9. He was three-years-old. RPD Chief Scott Booth says, 'we bear the weight of this loss with solemn reflection.' Information on funeral arrangements will be made available in the near future. Virginia State Police issue CODI Alert for missing 15-year-old girl
ROANOKE, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police have issued a CODI Alert on behalf of the Roanoke Police Department for a missing 15-year-old girl. Zahrra Rose Ahmed was last seen on Tuesday at the Old Vinton Mill Road area at approximately 10:30 p.m. Ahmed stands at 5-feet, 4-inches tall and weighs 126 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes. It's unknown what clothing she was wearing. Her disappearance poses a credible threat to her health and safety as determined by the investigating agency. 8-year-old injured during hit-and-run crash on Hanover Avenue, RPD said
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Roanoke Police are searching for the driver in a hit-and-run investigation that injured an 8-year-old on February 24. RPD said that officers responded to the 1900 block of Hanover Avenue around 8:29 a.m. on Monday after reports of a hit-and-run crash. At the scene, an 8-year-old boy was found with non-life-threatening injuries after being hit while riding his bicycle. 49-year-old dies after single-vehicle crash in Montgomery County The driver of the vehicle allegedly fled before police arrived at the scene, according to RPD. Police said the boy was taken to the hospital for treatment. The investigation is ongoing.
