Liverpool announce ex-Wales boss will join coaching staff in shock move

Liverpool have landed ex-Wales boss Rob Page as their new U21s boss after the Premier League club underwent a shake-up of their coaching staff within their youth set-up Liverpool have confirmed that Rob Page has moved to Anfield and will become the new manager of their U21s after his spell as Wales boss came to an end. He led his national side for four years, taking them to their first World Cup for more than 60 years. Bosses at Anfield were keen to overhaul their youth set-up this summer after long-serving U21s boss Barry Lewtas stepped down. Their U18s head coach, Marc Bridge-Wilkinson, also chose to leave the club. ‌ Page, who was succeeded at Wales boss by ex- Liverpool star Craig Bellamy, was identified as the perfect individual to work with the young talent on the club's books. He has done so previously having been the Wales U21 manager. That's alongside spells at Port Vale and Northampton. ‌ The ex-Wales boss guided his country to Euro 2020 and then the World Cup two years later. Only a penalty shootout denied them a spot at Euro 2024 and a third successive major tournament. Throughout his time in charge he continued to back youth and two men who are at Liverpool - Owen Beck and Lewis Koumas - were both given opportunities and have become Welsh internationals. In Premier League 2 last season Liverpool's U21s finished 16th out of 26 teams, winning seven of their 20 matches with Page now tasked with improving that showing. The club's Academy director Alex Inglethorpe said: "Rob brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to a key role as young players look to bridge that gap from Academy prospect to first-team footballer. His recent achievements in guiding Wales to the last 16 at Euro 2020 before qualifying for the 2022 World Cup speak for themselves but perhaps less heralded is the work that took place during his time in charge of the national team, which saw numerous pathway players make it into the senior squad. "This is something we have seen first-hand at Liverpool with several of our Academy players making significant progress on the international stage under Rob's guidance. This level of experience in transitioning young footballers towards the professional game and on to the highest levels of domestic and international football will be a significant resource for all at the Academy, especially the players. "Myself and all the staff are greatly looking forward to working with Rob as we endeavour to continue producing players capable of playing at the highest level and in the most demanding of arenas." Former Wales boss Rob Page joins Liverpool

Liverpool have appointed former Wales manager Rob Page as the head coach of their Under-21s. Page, who has managed Wales in two of the four major tournaments in their history, has returned to coaching to replace Barry Lewtas, who stepped down earlier this month. The 50-year-old is a former Wales Under-21 manager before becoming Ryan Giggs' assistant with the senior side and then taking charge when the former Manchester United player was put on leave. Page took Wales to the last 16 of Euro 2020 and then their first World Cup in 64 years, though they only earned one point in Qatar in 2022. The former Northampton and Port Vale manager was sacked by Wales last summer after a four-year reign and now takes charge of Liverpool's Under-21 squad, which includes talents such as Trey Nyoni, Kaide Gordon, Jayden Danns, Lewis Koumas, James McConnell, Owen Beck, Amara Nallo, Rio Ngumoha and Isaac Mabaya. Liverpool's academy director Alex Inglethorpe said: 'Rob brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to a key role as young players look to bridge that gap from academy prospect to first-team footballer. 'His recent achievements in guiding Wales to the last 16 at Euro 2020 before qualifying for the 2022 World Cup speak for themselves but perhaps less heralded is the work that took place during his time in charge of the national team, which saw numerous pathway players make it into the senior squad. Liverpool appoint former Wales manager Rob Page as under-21s head coach

Liverpool have appointed former Wales manager Rob Page as the new head coach of their under-21s. The 50-year-old takes over from Barry Lewtas, who left the club earlier this month after 12 years of service. It's Page's first role since he was sacked by Wales last June following four years in charge of the national team which saw him lead them to both the Euros and the World Cup. Advertisement Liverpool believe his appointment can help enhance the pathway for young players from the club's academy to the first-team set-up. Current Liverpool youngsters Lewis Koumas and Owen Beck were among those to progress from Wales' youth ranks into the senior squad under the guidance of Page, as well as Liverpool academy graduates such as Harry Wilson and Neco Williams. After ending his playing career, which included eight years with Watford, in 2011, Page's first senior managerial role came at Port Vale, where he was made caretaker manager in September 2014. He was appointed on a permanent basis the following month and held the position until the end of the 2015-16 season. Page then joined League One side Northampton Town in May 2016 but only lasted seven months in the role and was sacked in January 2017. He was hired as Wales under-21s coach later that year and became an assistant coach under Ryan Giggs in 2019. Following Giggs' arrest in November 2020, he was placed in interim charge of the side, guiding the nation to the round of 16 at the following summer's European Championships. Giggs officially stepped down in June 2022 and Page became the permanent manager. He led the team at 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Liverpool FC can confirm the appointment of Rob Page as the new head coach of the club's U21s group. — Liverpool FC (@LFC) June 25, 2025 He replaces Lewtas, who recently stepped down, saying the time was right to pursue 'a new adventure'. He started off as under-12s coach at Liverpool before working his way up the ranks. He led the under-18s to FA Youth Cup glory in 2019 before taking over the under-21s in the summer of 2020. 'Sometimes you just know the time is right for a new adventure and I really feel the perfect time for me is now,' he told 'Of course, I'm sad to be moving on but I also have 12 wonderful years to look back on, including the last five with the 21s. Advertisement 'Seeing young players make that next step to the LFC first team or moving on to success elsewhere is hugely satisfying.' Lewtas helped develop the likes of Curtis Jones, Conor Bradley, Jarell Quansah, Tyler Morton, James McConnell and Vitezslav Jaros, who all made the leap to the first team from academy level. ()
