Former owner of Casa Brighouse Jack McDaid admits VAT fraud
The ex-owner of a restaurant, bar and wedding venue has pleaded guilty to evading VAT and deliberately defrauding HM Revenue and McDaid, 67, who previously ran Casa Brighouse in West Yorkshire under the company Casa Events, was due to stand trial at Leeds Crown Court along with business partner Samuel Revy-Holmes, 35, and accountant Robert Brook, 47, but changed his plea on Tuesday before the start of a Honour Judge Simon Phillips KC told McDaid he would be sentenced at the end of the trial, which was expected to last about two Revy-Holmes and Mr Brook have both denied conspiracy to evade VAT and cheating the public revenue and their trial began on Tuesday. Police investigating reported explosive device in Owego
OWEGO, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Several police agencies responded to a report of a possible bomb in the Village of Owego on Wednesday. At around 9:30 a.m., the Owego Police Department was dispatched to 77-79 Liberty Street in Owego for a report of a possible Improvised Explosive Device. Police closed the immediate scene off to the public and the nearby residences were evacuated. The Endicott Bomb Squad arrived at the scene. Bomb K-9 Units from Tompkins County and Cornell University responded as well. Owego Fire Department and Owego EMS were both placed on standby for assistance. Police determined that no other devices were present. The Endicott Bomb Squad rendered the Improvised Explosive Devices safe. The investigation remains ongoing.
