The incident took place on Wilson Place in East Kilbride yesterday, Monday May 19, at around 1.25pm.
Police Scotland said today that three men, who were dressed in dark clothing and wearing face coverings, are being sought in connection with the serious assault.
The force are also investigating a vehicle fire, which happened at around 9.15pm the same day, and saw officers called to the Boswell Drive area of Blantyre.
A blue Audi A5 had been deliberately set on fire, the blaze was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and there were no injuries, and police are treating the two incidents as linked.
Detective Superintendent Martin McGhee said: 'We believe this was a targeted incident. From our enquiries so far, we believe the car that was set on fire was also used in the earlier serious assault.
'I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed either of these incidents to contact us as soon as possible. In addition, anyone who has CCTV, doorbell or dash-cam footage is asked to get in touch as this may be able to assist our enquiries.
"We understand these incidents will be concerning for the local community but please be assured we will bring those involved to justice.'
