NRG, GE Vernova and Kiewit to advance four natural gas power plants
NRG Energy, GE Vernova and Kiewit's subsidiary The Industrial Company (TIC) have announced a new venture to accelerate electricity generation capacity to support demand growth in the US, addressing the rising need for computing power and GenAI.
The US-based initiative integrates the expertise of a power generation company, an original equipment manufacturer and an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company to deliver efficient and rapid power solutions for GenAI.
The venture aims to shorten the concept-to-electron timeline, ensuring swift deployment of electricity generation capacity to meet increasing demand.
NRG business and wholesale operations executive vice-president Robert J Gaudette stated: 'The growing demand for electricity in part due to GenAI and the buildup of data centres means we need to form new, innovative partnerships to quickly increase America's dispatchable generation.
'Working together, these three industry leaders are committed to executing with speed and excellence to meet our customers' generation needs.'
The initial focus will be on advancing four projects, totalling more than 5GW of new natural gas combined cycle power plants for the ERCOT [Electric Reliability Council of Texas] and PJM [Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland] markets.
The first 1.2GW of capacity is set to begin commercial operations in 2029, supported by two 7HA gas turbines obtained via a slot reservation agreement with GE Vernova.
The model is replicable and scaleable, with potential to fill a future pipeline of between 10GW and15GW and expand to other regions across the US.
Subsequent projects are planned to come online up to 2032, showcasing the venture's commitment to timely delivery. It aims to ensure a steady supply of power to support the growing GenAI industry.
Kiewit executive vice-president Dave Flickinger stated: 'We're excited to be part of this partnership to deliver power generation projects to support the growth and demand of technology development in the U.S.
'Our long, successful track record as an EPC contractor in the power market will help us meet the speed, safety, quality and delivery demands of this venture – and serve as a strong partner to NRG and GE Vernova.'
