Selwyn building consent company expected to get green light
Private company Building Consent Approvals Ltd is expected to soon start issuing building consents in the Selwyn district. Photo: Supplied Building consents in the Selwyn district will soon be able to be issued by a private company. The Selwyn Times understands an announcement will be made on Wednesday. Until now, only the Selwyn District Council has been able to issue consents in the district. It will be the first time a private company has been given the green light to issue consents in New Zealand. Christchurch company Building Consent Approvals Ltd was given a building consent authority in October, pending approval from the Ministry of Business and Innovation. It is understood the Minister for Building and Construction, Chris Penk, will be in Selwyn this week to make the announcement. District council executive director development and growth Robert Love said the company will provide choice. 'Having a private BCA in the market provides choice for customers, so can be seen as healthy competition.' So far this year, the district council has received 398 resource consents, down 8% compared to the 428 consents. In April, the average processing time for consents was 35 days. Love did not say whether the new company would mean consents were issued faster. 'The speed of consenting largely comes down to consenting volumes which fluctuate, and can be impacted by changes in legislation, which may mean processing of some areas takes longer as the Building Code becomes more complex,' he said. Leading the project is Ian McCauley who has worked in building consent departments for multiple councils. In October, McCauley told NZ Herald: 'It's been a hard slog over the last 18 months, but it's been worthwhile and paid off.' Building Consent Approvals Ltd would not comment until the announcement was made public. It is understood once the company starts issuing consents, its focus will be on lower-risk work, leaving more complex consents to the council. A report to the council's audit and risk committee noted there was a risk the new company could mean a reduction in council workload and could see council staff move to Building Consent Approvals Ltd. While any lost consents will mean a reduction in revenue, the company will still have to pay the council a filing fee for lodging a consent.

Avoid These 3 Worst Habits That Are 'Destroying' Your Sleep
Sleep plays a crucial role in your overall health, affecting everything from mood and energy to weight and immune function. Yet, many people struggle with poor sleep without realizing that everyday habits might be to blame. From late-night screen time to caffeine overload or inconsistent sleep schedules, certain behaviors can disrupt your body's natural rhythms and make it harder to fall—and stay—asleep. Recognizing and changing these sleep-sabotaging habits is the first step toward getting the restful, restorative sleep your body needs. Neuroscientist Robert Love recently shared the three worst habits to quit because they can 'destroy' your sleep and even 'increase the risk of Alzheimer's' because lack of quality sleep is linked to declining brain health. According to him, TV in the bedroom, eating 2 hours before bed, and checking emails are the worst habits to avoid. Read on to learn more. TVs emit blue light, which interferes with your body's production of melatonin—the hormone that helps regulate sleep. This can make it harder to fall asleep and reduce overall sleep quality. Love says having a TV in your bedroom will lead to 'poor quality sleep.' Your body is less efficient at digesting food when you're lying down. Eating too close to bedtime can lead to indigestion, bloating, or acid reflux, making it harder to fall or stay asleep. 'If you eat close to bedtime, this impairs sleep. Digestion takes a lot of energy and blood flow, so if you have a full stomach when you go to bed, your body's energy is being used to digest food rather than repair your body," he says. To support better sleep, aim to finish your last meal at least 2–3 hours before going to bed, and keep it light and balanced if you're genuinely hungry. Emails often involve work, stress, or to-do lists that activate your brain and increase anxiety or alertness—exactly the opposite of what you need before winding down. Love cites the blue light emitted from the phone as something that can impair sleep and reduce melatonin. He also says thinking and reading about work or other emails can cause stress, and stress is the number one thing 'impairing sleep in Americans.' He recommends checking them 2 hours before bed and spending the hour before bed reading a book, listening to music, or spending time with loved ones.

Midlothian couple renews vows 71 years later to celebrate Love and family
Decades ago, a U.S. Marine stationed in Korea got a letter from a woman he had never met: Kathleen. That letter led to many more, and eventually a wedding. In celebration of their seven decades of love, Kathleen and Albert Love renewed their vows at the Midtowne Assisted Living and Memory Care in Midlothian. "We've been married a long time," Kathleen Love said. "Our kids weren't there for our first wedding, so we decided to do it again for them." This time, the couple got the kids involved. One of their sons, now a pastor, officiated the ceremony. The other serenaded the lovebirds. "They always taught us a lot of lessons in life," said Robert Love, one of the couple's sons. "They taught us how to love each other and love one another and love our fellow man." Kathleen and Albert Love didn't know each other when she first started writing to him in Korea. But five days after he returned home, the two were married. "I never even asked her to get married," Albert Love said. "I just told her we was going to get married." But how did they know it was true love? "I knew that God was saving her for me, because her name," said Albert. "I was 'Hart,'" finished Kathleen. "And I married Love." Kathleen Hart married Albert Love. As the two fed each other cake and toasted to the future, generations of Loves watched on with tears in their eyes. "Seventy-one years," Albert Love said. "Wonderful, wonderful life. Wouldn't have it no other way."

New Investigational Drug TB006 FDA – Approved For Compassionate Use
Naples, FL - April 21, 2025 - TB006, a new investigational drug, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for compassionate use and is currently being evaluated in a clinical trial for Alzheimer's disease. The FDA's compassionate use designation allows patients with serious or life-threatening conditions to access investigational treatments when no satisfactory alternatives are available. TB006 is currently undergoing clinical trials to assess its safety and potential effects on inflammation and cognitive function in individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. According to clinical investigators involved in early-stage research, the drug has been administered to over 300 patients to date, with no adverse side effects reported. Preliminary data from a placebo-controlled trial suggested that: These findings are currently being further investigated through ongoing clinical studies. With Alzheimer's disease on the rise, this is very exciting news for those over age 65 and those with a history of dementia in their family. Among the clinical sites authorized to provide TB006 under compassionate use is Brain Power Clinics, located in West Palm Beach, Florida. The clinic is led by Dr. Joshua Helman, a Harvard-trained physician with over a decade of experience focused on integrative approaches to cognitive decline. Known to patients as Dr. Josh, he currently administers TB006 under FDA protocols as part of a broader, individualized care model. Dr. Helman works in partnership with Dr. Robert Love, Ph.D., a neuroscientist recognized for his contributions to the field of Alzheimer's prevention and brain health. Together, the team at Brain Power Clinics offers a multidisciplinary approach that combines investigational therapies like TB006 with behavioral coaching and lifestyle interventions designed to support cognitive function. Participation in the compassionate use program is limited to individuals who meet specific eligibility criteria, which include age and diagnosis parameters in accordance with FDA and clinical trial guidelines.
