'Every day is Memorial Day for any veteran that has gone through any type of War.'

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- Today, May 26th is Memorial Day. A day of remembrance for the fallen soldiers who lost their lives in battle. Thousands of soldiers and their families have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. This day is dedicated to honoring their legacy. Many local Veterans said their thoughts on what Memorial Day means to them. 'This is Memorial Day, it's the one like I said that didn't come home. We've all got somebody that's been like that or didn't come home, or know somebody anyway.''It's time to celebrate all the fallen warriors and just everybody come together all the veterans come together and celebrate.''It's really a day to remember the ones that gave the ultimate sacrifice. But every day is a Memorial Day for any veteran that has gone through any type of War.''Remembering all of our conrads and those who came before us that paid the ultimate price for our freedom.' This Holiday was first called 'Decoration Day' and celebrated on May 30th, but in 1967 the name was changed to Memorial Day, and the Uniform Monday Holiday Act established the date change to the last Monday to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. 'It started in the 1800s,' Robert Thames Commander at Post 7208 said. 'It was started by widow women, whose husbands got killed in the Civil War. So, they started making roses, and crosses for the graves.' Army Staff Sergeant Bradley Bishop reminds everyone to never forget about the sacrifice many soldiers have made so you can enjoy time with your family today.'Spend it with family, spend it with friends,' Staff Sergeant Bishop said. 'Just remember whenever you are having the barbeque and you are spending the time with your family, families without that one person that gave the ultimate sacrifice.' The U.S Military has approximately 1.328 million active duty personnel across all branches: the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. There are a lot of men and women fighting for our us and our freedom. It is important to honor them and everyone who has fallen. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
