Norfolk-based Navy ships in New York City for Fleet Week

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Fleet Week is a time for sailors and Marines to show off what they do through ship tours and many other events, as they get invited to things like baseball games, national talk shows and other happenings in New York City. While there is fun to be had, it's also described as a humbling experience. Many spectators watched the parade of ships enter Manhattan, even on a misty, drizzly day. The USS New York came into the Hudson River just before noon Wednesday — the ship with 7.5 tons of World Trade Center steel in its bow, passing by Ground Zero. Norfolk-based sailors and Marines are cruising into the city that never sleeps, ready to show off what they do. 'Aviation operations going on, [and] at the same time, we've got well deck operations going on to project power ashore,' said Lt. Gen. Roberta Shae with Marine Forces Command. As part of Fleet Week, Fleet Forces Command Admiral Daryl Caudle got to visit the NYPD Joint Operations Center. U.S. Secretary of the Navy John Phelan is also joining them for Fleet Week, now 55 days into his new position. Since starting, Phelan said he is taking time to meet the sailors, visit ships and focus on deterring threats. 'So I have been really impressed by the dedication and the work ethic, and… the fighting spirit of our troops, with the Marines… and the sailors,' Phelan said. 'And that's a great thing. Do we have work to do? Yes. Are there things that we could do to get better? Absolutely.' Ship tours in New York City start Thursday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
