Piccoli drops transfer hint and must ‘earn' Italy call-up

Cagliari striker Roberto Piccoli insists he doesn't want to be a backup striker and admits he must continue improving to 'earn' an Italy national team call-up. The 24-year-old has scored ten goals in 36 Serie A games this season and his Cagliari side end the season tonight in an away game at Napoli. Advertisement 'Coach Nicola has given me a lot of confidence. I've learned how to lead the line on my own and how to attack the space better,' Piccoli told Gazzetta. 'I've always given everything, working hard for the team as well. However, I'll be honest, scoring goals is everything.' Cagliari have an option to sign Piccoli on a permanent transfer from Atalanta for €12m, but there are rumours that other big clubs, including Milan, are watching the Italian striker. Piccoli, however, wants to get regular playing time and would not accept being a backup striker. (Photo by) 'Absolutely not. I want to earn my place by scoring goals,' he said. Advertisement 'At the end of the season, we'll sit down to have a talk and reach an agreement. I am happy to stay in Cagliari. Our life as footballers is like a race in which everyone starts out equal.' Piccoli is waiting for his first Italy call-up, but competition for a spot up front is stiff as Mateo Retegui and Moise Kean are the best scorers in Serie A this season. 'Kean drives me crazy, in a good way,' Piccoli said. 'He's got the physicality, he's strong in the box, he attacks the space, and he's complete. I hope I can do even better. There are many great Italian strikers. It's healthy competition. 'I give my all every single day and play every match as if it were my last, trying to make an impact. You have to earn a spot on the national team.' Piccoli has also played in Serie A for Atalanta, Spezia, Verona, Empoli, Genoa and Lecce and has scored 23 goals in 133 appearances in Italy's top flight.

Worry-Free – Inter Milan Avoid Drama To Manage 3-1 Serie A Win Vs Cagliari

Inter Milan managed a relatively 'worry-free' Serie A win over Cagliari to put the pressure on Napoli in the title race. This is the view in today's print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They praise the Nerazzurri's second half display. Inter Milan may have felt that they'd 'seen this movie before' when Roberto Piccoli headed home for Cagliari at the start of the second half of yesterday's Serie A clash. The Nerazzurri were 2-0 up at halftime of the match. That was identical to their last two matches in the league. They had blown Udinese and Parma away in the first half, giving themselves a seemingly solid advantage. But that certainty evaporated in the second half of both those matches. Against Udinese, Inter did manage to hold on for the three points. But they had to survive an almighty scare after Oumar Solet got a goal back for the Friulani. And away in Parma last weekend, it was even worse – Inter actually allowed the hosts to equalize and take a point. Considering this precedent, Inter will have had reason to worry that it would be a familiar story against Cagliari. But the Nerazzurri didn't switch off after the Rossoblu's goal. On the contrary, it only seemed to be a wake-up call for Inter. Just a few minutes later, Yann Bisseck headed home from a corner to restore Inter's two-goal cushion. And that just seemed to completely change the dynamic of the match. Inter were no longer just holding on. They had reasserted themselves. And from then on, it was a patient and balanced performance from the Nerazzurri. They controlled the tempo and protected their goal well. And the reward was three points to really put Napoli under pressure ahead of tomorrow's clash with Empoli.

West Ham-loanee Cornet on song to rescue point for Genoa at Cagliari

CAGLIARI, Italy (AP) — Cagliari and Genoa shared the points in a cagey 1-1 draw in Serie A on Friday. The home side came into the game after straight losses to Bologna and Juventus and only four goals in its last six league matches. But it took the lead in the 18th minute when Nicolas Viola took a nice pass from Roberto Piccoli and finished coolly into the bottom corner. Maxwel Cornet, the forward on loan from West Ham, equalized for Genoa two minutes into the second half with his second goal in four games. The result leaves Genoa in 12th place and Cagliari in 15th, four points above the relegation zone. ___
