LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)– Festival International brings thousands of people from all over to celebrate music, food and culture. Sergeant Robin Green with the Lafayette Police Department highlights safety measures they have in place to ensure the public is safe. 'Every year after each festival, we always meet and have a meeting at the end of our events, and we're always looking for ways to improve safety of this festival because we have so many people coming from out of town and we want to make sure they come here, have a good time and at the same time feel safe.' Green said. Additional bollards were added to the downtown area. Increased police presence of officers that will be working in uniform and in plain clothes. Multiple agencies that the Lafayette police partner up with will be assisting with additional security for Festival International. Also she said they placed as many cameras as they could fit in the area. Be vigilant, especially when it comes to parking. Do not park in dark areas or walk in dark areas, especially if you are alone. 'Downtown has a few little alleys where the lighting is not the best and so we ask that people especially we have a lot of people coming from out of town, out of the state, out of the country and so we ask that if you can do the buddy system, don't walk in dark areas,' she said. Bringing children put a piece of paper with an adult's phone number and name so they can be contacted in the event that someone loses a child. Also before even attending the festival, take a picture of your child so police know exactly what they look like, exactly what they have on to let other officers in the area know who to look out for. 'We understand, it's a festival. Alcohol will be served and please, we want people to drink responsibly. Lafayette Citizens' Academy offers insight into police work
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — Lafayette residents have until May 12 to sign up for the Lafayette Police Department's Citizens' Academy. The Academy is a 12-week program that meets every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and begins on June 4. The Academy allows residents to tour rarely accessible areas of the Lafayette Police Department (LPD). Information Officer Sgt. Robin Green is excited to discuss this with community members, introduce the LPD and showcase a side people rarely see. 'They get to come in and learn about all the different areas of the police department, and they get to ask questions they may have, and we can discuss it,' Green added. Lafayette Police highlights law for bystanders who interfere with law enforcement investigations Green understands people want to know about certain decisions directly important to them. 'When they leave here, we want them to have a better understanding of what we do and why we do it, and whatever they may have questions about,' Green said. Participants of the Citizens Academy will embark on a tour of the various departments within the LPD and discover firsthand how each department operates. Many people don't know there is a fitness room for officers inside the LPD. 'This was donated by Planet Fitness. They were renovating their gym and they donated all of this stuff to us,' Green stated. Lafayette Police report hundreds of citations in increased red-light enforcement effort In addition, the LPD has several interview rooms with resources to help officers during interrogations, interviews and collecting evidence. 'This is one of our interview rooms that we used to interview, and we have one on the other side and three additional ones just like this. We have the TV monitors where we can monitor the people we have on the inside,' she explained. Another area Green showcased was the Operating While Intoxicated or OWI processing area. 'We'll have someone stand right here and we will read them their rights. Also, there is a camera right here so that we can check on the Nystagmus in their eyes. The Nystagmus is going to be the jerking of the eyes when they consume so much alcohol,' Green said. Sergeant Green believes the Academy provides valuable insights for the public and the LPD. 'We have a better relationship. I'm not saying we're friends, but we have a better understanding, and we have a better relationship with these individuals,' Green mentioned. Lafayette Police Department warns of rise of police impersonation scam calls
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – The Lafayette Police Department is warning about police impersonation scam calls. Sgt. Robin Green said since January 1st till now; the past six weeks, the Lafayette Police Department has been experiencing a large influx of scam calls about people calling and impersonating law enforcement officers, whether it be the Lafayette Police Department or Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office or any of the surrounding agencies. 'We want people to know that as law enforcement officers, we would never call anybody and demand money for missing court dates or missing jury duty or just anything in reference to anything dealing with the court system,' she explained. 'Officers will not call and demand money and so because we are noticing such an influx of the calls and people are losing money, we felt that we need to get the information out there that if people do receive these calls from scammers, hang up immediately and call that agency or whatever business or financial institution that they claim to be from and verify the information before they even go to their bank or try to send money to these individuals.' LUS warns customers about utility bill scams She said through investigation one person lost $10,000 by falling victim to the scam, 'That's a substantial amount of money. I mean, just any money that, you know, people work hard for, we want to make sure that people are not falling victim to these scams, because a lot of the reports that we've been taking, it's after the fact. They've wire this money to these people and now that's money they can't get back,' she said. Pay attention to where the scammers are sending you. If it is places that are just unusual, like kiosks in a convenience store or going to Wal-Mart and wiring money through an account. Then it is a red flag. 'It is not the normal way to pay for fines for missed court dates or jury duty or whatever. So pay attention to that,' she said. 'If they're sending you to a local convenience store to go pay a fine at a kiosk, in that convenience store. No, that's going to be a scam and especially unconventional ways to pay the fines like Apple Pay cards or iTunes cards or Walmart gift cards. You never pay any type of fines with the court system by using those types of payments, even cryptocurrency. So pay attention. If the payment that they're asking for is unusual, nine times out of ten is going to be a scam.' Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Law enforcement are working to solve scam cases but it is a lengthy process. For instance, Sgt. Green said they have one case stemming from 2024 in October where police were able to link a woman out of Marrero, Louisiana named Brittany Moore. 'We actually have a warrant out for her arrest for one count of extortion. She was not the only person that was involved. There are two others from Georgia and so the investigation is still ongoing,' said Sgt. Green. 'So many times people think it's just people from out of the country. But no, it's people from just within the United States that are doing these scams and so we are looking into them. But like I say, it is a lengthy process because it's a lot of search warrants, a lot of subpoenas trying to get records for these types of investigations. But we want people to be aware.' If you or someone you know has fallen victim to a possible scam contact your local law enforcement. More information on how to avoid scams can be found here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
