First Monroe County Deaf CERT Program class graduates, equipped to assist in local disasters

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — In the face of disasters including fires and snowstorms, many folks expect first responders to be readily available and answer the call. But, if they're delayed due to another emergency, Community Emergency Responder Training (CERT) teams are expected to step in and assist. The program was founded in California in the 1980s but has since made its way to Rochester. On Wednesday, the 39th class graduated at the Monroe Community College Public Safety Training Facility on Scottsville Road. However, this class was geared to empower specific members of our community: those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Battalion Chief for the Rochester Fire Department Joe Luna shared his excitement for the new partnership between RIT's National Technical Institute for the Deaf and Monroe County's CERT program. 'It's great to have them as resources to help the community, to help in setting up shelters or in potential large snow events in the future, things along those lines,' Luna said. Before graduating, the class was expected to complete a final evolution, which is a disaster simulation in which they're required to put all they've learned into action. Luna explained what students learn over the course of nine weeks. 'It's a lot of medical training, some basic ideas behind psychology, fire safety, search and rescue techniques,' Luna said. CERT Team Leader for Monroe County's 39th class Matthew Parsley, who is hard of hearing, explained how he sees this partnership as an asset to the community. 'The Rochester community has the largest per capita deaf population, so it's a real gain to have a team that's designed to communicate directly with folks using American Sign Language (ASL),' Parsley said. The Rochester Fire Department plans to hold future CERT trainings in the future, including classes for those who are not hard-of-hearing. More information on how to get involved can be found here. RFD: ‘Smoking' Chromebook at local school sends person to hospital

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Rochester Fire Department said one person was hospitalized following an incident involving a smoking Chromebook at a local school. According to RFD, a Hazmat team was called to remove the device from the area due to it being lithium-powered. One person was taken for medical evaluation due to smoke inhalation. It has not been confirmed if this was a student, staff member, or a firefighter. RFD said that this happened at a 'local school,' but they have not confirmed which school this took place at. News 8 is working to confirm where this happened. This incident comes as a social media trend is teaching students how to short-circuit or puncture the lithium batteries of their school-issued laptops. The trend, known as the 'Chromebook Challenge,' has led to fires. While it hasn't been confirmed that this was connected to the Chromebook Challenge, at least five of these incidents across New York are reportedly connected. Fire officials and local districts are warning parents about the incident, saying these can lead to fires, explosions, and toxic vapors. The Rochester Fire Department is still investigating what caused the incident. This story will be updated once more details are revealed. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Rochester home might be 'total loss' after Saturday fire

May 10—ROCHESTER — A fire likely destroyed a Rochester home Saturday morning, May 10. Rochester Fire Department crews responded to a structure fire call at 7:25 a.m. on Saturday to a home in the 300 block of 36th Avenue Southeast, according to a statement from the RFD. Upon arrival, responding units found thick white smoke coming from the roof eaves and vents of the home, however, no flames were visible and it was unclear where the fire was located. Fire department crews deployed a hose line for suppression efforts. Due to the advanced stage of the fire, crews coordinated ventilation and fire attack operations. A combination of fans and openings made in the structure allowed for crews to locate and knock down the main body of fire, RFD stated. A search of the home confirmed no occupants were inside at the time of the fire. One firefighter sustained an injury to his hand, the statement noted. Crews then extinguished a few hot spots that remained. Crews also assisted the Fire Marshal's Division with investigation efforts, RFD stated. The home sustained heavy smoke damage, and its is a possible total loss. Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service, Rochester Police Department and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
