Soundgarden was recently announced as part of the next class of musicians to be inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2025. The Seattle-based band will join six others named in the 2025 class including Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker and The White Stripes. Here's what to know and how to watch the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. Soundgarden is an American rock band that got its start in Seattle's grunge scene in the mid-'80s. Lead singer and drummer, Chris Cornell, formed the band with bassist Hiro Yamamoto, guitarist Kim Thayil, and later, Matt Cameron, who took over on drums. Bassist Ben Shepherd would later replace Yamamoto before the band's third album. Soundgarden was active between 1984-1998. The band broke up in 1998 before getting back together in 2010. They continued to release music together until 2017, when 52-year-old lead singer Cornell died by suicide shortly after completing a show on Soundgarden's "2017 North American Tour." Soundgarden's full discography consists of six studio albums, two live albums, six compilation albums, eight extended plays, 24 singles and 23 music videos. They have received two Grammy Awards and eight nominations. To be considered for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, artists or bands must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years before the year of nomination. The full induction ceremony will be held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Nov. 8. The ceremony will air live on Disney+ and will appear on Hulu the following day. This year's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class leans heavily into its classic roots, dominated by a familiar lineup of male rock acts. But breaking through the boys' club is Cyndi Lauper, a trailblazing solo artist known for her bold style, unforgettable voice, and lasting influence on pop and rock music. Among the seven new inductees—narrowed down from a shortlist of 14—Lauper stands out, alongside genre-bending group Outkast, in an otherwise traditional, guitar-driven lineup. The names announced were as follows, as reported by USA Today. Bad Company Chubby Checker Joe Cocker Cyndi Lauper Outkast Soundgarden The White Stripes This year's Rock Hall ceremony will also spotlight influential figures beyond the main performer category. Hip-hop pioneers Salt-N-Pepa and legendary singer-songwriter Warren Zevon are set to receive the Musical Influence Award. The Musical Excellence Award will go to acclaimed arranger Thom Bell, renowned session pianist Nicky Hopkins, and groundbreaking bassist Carol Kaye. In addition, industry veteran Lenny Waronker will be honoured with the Ahmet Ertegun Award for his significant contributions as a producer and label executive. The ceremony will be broadcast live from Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles and will be available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu the next day. A condensed version of the same will also be released on a date that is yet to be announced. Not everyone on this year's ballot made it through. First-time nominees like The Black Crowes, Billy Idol, Maná, and Phish were left out, along with pop powerhouse Mariah Carey and Britpop icons Oasis, both also first-time contenders. Meanwhile, Joy Division/New Order, nominated for a second time after their 2023 debut on the list, will have to wait another year for potential induction.

Veteran jam band Phish won the fan vote with almost 330,000 – about 50,000 more than the next highest, Bad Company – but contrary to popular belief, winning the fan vote does not guarantee induction. Phish are only the second artist since the Dave Matthews Band in 2020 to earn fan kudos but not induction the same year (DMB joined the Rock Hall in 2024). When voting closed April 21 after a two-month window, the top seven earners in the fan vote received one vote each toward their final total. The top fan vote earners in order were Phish, Bad Company, Idol, Lauper, Cocker, Soundgarden and Checker. The April 27 episode will be quite an eventful one, as contestants take on the world of rock music for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Night. But the competitors aren't alone in prepping for their performances — music legend James Taylor will be on hand to help mentor the Top 14 with their song selections. "Love they have James Taylor. Awesome 👌 mentor. Legendary!! 👏👏👏," a different follower added. Famous for songs like "Fire and Rain"and "You've Got a Friend," James has been one of the most prolific artists in the music industry for over 50 years. A six-time Grammy Award winner, James was also inducted into the Rock and Hall Hall of Fame back in 2000. But James' appearance isn't the only thing American Idol viewers can look forward to on April 27. Along with the contestant's performances, ABC News reported host will reveal which acclaimed musical acts will be inducted into the 2025 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
