Rockets-Warriors draws NBA's best cable TV ratings for first-round Game 7 since 2009

Rockets-Warriors draws NBA's best cable TV ratings for first-round Game 7 since 2009 Sunday night's Rockets-Warriors Game 7 averaged 6.6 million viewers. Among cable telecasts, that ranks as most-viewed Game 7 of a first-round NBA series since 2009. Unfortunately, the Houston Rockets didn't get the victory in Sunday's home Game 7 of their first-round 2025 playoff series against the Golden State Warriors. But they did have plenty of eyeballs on their product. According to TNT, Sunday night's game from Houston's Toyota Center averaged 6.6 million viewers. Among cable telecasts — i.e. excluding ABC games that are available on an over-the-air basis — that ranks as most-viewed Game 7 of a first-round NBA series since 2009. Overall, TNT says its first-round ratings are up 4% from last season. As for the Warriors-Rockets clash, it was a fun matchup featuring plenty of juicy storylines with national appeal. At 37 and 35 years old, respectively, it's not clear how many more playoff runs that future Hall of Famers Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler will have. There's also considerable history and animosity between the rival franchises, with Golden State having eliminated the Rockets from the Western Conference playoffs on five separate occasions over a span of less than 10 years. As for the current team, Houston is a young franchise on the way up, and its All-Star is promising Turkish center Alperen Sengun — who holds international appeal. All of those factors led to a fun series showcasing both teams, and perhaps it leads to the NBA's national television partners choosing more Rockets games for next season's 2025-26 inventory. In addition to TNT's ratings, there were also simulcast broadcasts on regional sports networks (RSNs) using team-specific announcers from Houston's Space City Home Network and Golden State's NBC Sports Bay Area. Those will further add to the overall Game 7 audience figures. More: Rockets GM Rafael Stone: In 2025 offseason, roster continuity more likely than major trade

Game 3: Warriors grab series lead as Steph Curry torches Rockets in the playoffs, again

Even with co-star Jimmy Butler (left pelvic contusion) sidelined by injury, Warriors legend Steph Curry still proved too much for the Houston Rockets to handle in Golden State's 104-93 playoff victory (box score) on Saturday night. By winning Game 3 at home, the Warriors now lead the best-of-seven, first-round series by a 2-1 margin. Game 4 is Monday, also at San Francisco's Chase Center. Since Golden State already won once in Houston, the Rockets will need to win at least one road game to ultimately win the series — and despite leading by 13 points in the first half and facing an opponent without one of its two stars, the Rockets still couldn't get it done in Game 3. Advertisement After Jalen Green led the Rockets with 38 points in a Game 2 victory, the Warriors were much more aggressive in sending traps and help defenders his way, and the Rockets couldn't make them pay. Green finished with 9 points, the fewest of any Houston starter. "We expected that coming in," Rockets head coach Ime Udoka said postgame. "When (Green) does his job, and he has two on the ball and gets it to guys, they have to make them pay behind it. ... Teams have done it all year. Their gamble paid off. We didn't make them pay with that, especially with the paint shots." Houston made just 34-of-86 shots (39.5%) as a team — and excluding Dillon Brooks and reserves Steven Adams and Jabari Smith Jr. (all at 50% or better), the other five rotation players connected on just 24-of-68 shots (35.3%). The Rockets also made just 14-of-24 free throws (58.3%), which was much closer to their 55% clip in a Game 1 loss than their 80% during a Game 2 victory. Advertisement Curry was brilliant for the Warriors with 36 points, (52.2%), 9 assists, and 7 rebounds, while sparingly used reserves Gary Payton II and Buddy Hield combined for 33 points on 13-of-22 shooting (59.1%) and 7-of-14 from 3-point range (50.0%). Butler's status for Monday's Game 4 is not yet clear, though he has not been ruled out. Read on for highlights, interviews, and associated postgame tidbits and reaction. Warriors Announce Injury Update for Key Player Before Crucial Game 7

The Golden State Warriors face the Houston Rockets in Game 7 of their first-round playoff series on Sunday in Houston. Steve Kerr's group is looking to avoid blowing another 3-1 series lead. Golden State, of course, lost the 2016 NBA Finals to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers after owning a 3-1 advantage. Advertisement The Warriors won Game 1 in Houston but lost Games 2 and 5 on the road. To make matters worse, Golden State could be without a key player in Game 7. The Dubs announced that Gary Payton II is questionable to play in Game 7 due to an illness. Payton II is averaging 6.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 0.8 steals in the Rockets-Warriors series while shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from beyond the arc. The lefty hasn't been to the free-throw line. Houston has all the momentum going into Game 7 after winning Games 5 and 6. However, Golden State head coach Steve Kerr said his group is ready to roll for Game 7. Golden State Warriors forward Jimmy Butler talks to head coach Steve Kerr© D. Ross Cameron-Imagn Images "Staying together will not be an issue," Kerr said after Game 6. "This team has been connected and has been through everything. There's no question the frustration tonight set in. I could see it. The body language. We can't have that. We can't afford that in Game 7. Advertisement "We've got to stay tight the whole way through. I like our chances. I've seen what this group can do over the years. We've been in a lot of Game 7s, had a lot of success. Jimmy Butler is Jimmy Butler. He's been in all of these games. He's one of the clutch performers in the league, so ... we'll get ready. We'll regroup, be ready to roll." If Payton II doesn't play in Game 7, Buddy Hield will likely start in his place. Related: Alperen Sengun Issues Challenge To Warriors With Bold Comment Before Game 7

Rockets star Alperen Sengun on playoff anxiety: ‘It helps, it shows how much I want it'

Rockets star Alperen Sengun on playoff anxiety: 'It helps, it shows how much I want it' 'I can't sleep well, but I don't feel tired,' Alperen Sengun said prior to Sunday's Rockets-Warriors Game 7 of the playoffs. 'The anxiety I have is helping me a lot. It shows how much I want it.' Led by veteran players including Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green, the Golden State Warriors have previous Game 7 experience heading into Sunday's winner-take-all showdown in their first-round playoff series against the Houston Rockets. For the most part, the younger Rockets lack that experience. But as All-Star big man Alperen Sengun explained at Sunday's gameday shootaround, Houston is attempting to channel the emotions and use them in the proper ways. 'Of course it feels different,' said the Turkish center, who leads Houston in most major statistical categories for the 2025 playoffs. 'It's win or go home. Everybody has to give everything, and we know that.' 'I can't sleep well, but I don't feel tired,' Sengun explained. 'The anxiety I have is helping me a lot. It shows how much I want it, and how much I want to play the game. That's helped me a lot in the games, how focused I am and how much I want it.' Game 7 tips off at 7:30 p.m. Central from Houston's Toyota Center, with televised broadcasts available on both TNT and Space City Home Network. After losing three of the first four games of the best-of-seven series, the Rockets have stormed back with two consecutive wins to set up a winner-take-all finale. 'I don't think they've beaten us yet,' Sengun said of his perspective entering Game 7. 'We beat ourselves this series. We missed free throws, easy shots. Then, we were locked in, defensively and offensively. We have all the talent in the world, so there's no reason for us to lose the game.'
