3 Alberta provincial byelections called for June 23
Albertans in three ridings will go to the polls on June 23 after three byelections to fill vacancies were called Monday. Voters will be able to cast their ballots in Edmonton-Ellerslie, Edmonton-Strathcona and Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills. Edmonton-Strathcona has been vacant since Rachel Notley resigned in December. Edmonton-Ellerslie has been without an MLA since Rod Loyola resigned his seat to run in the federal election. The last MLA for Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills, Nathan Cooper, resigned his seat in the assembly earlier this month to become province's new representative to the United States A news release from Elections Alberta notes some key dates for the byelections: Candidate nominations are open currently and will close on June 5 at 2:00 p.m. Advance voting begins on Tuesday, June 17 and ends on Saturday, June 21. On election day, Monday, June 23, all voting places will be open from 9:00am to 8:00pm. Unofficial results will be available after voting closes on election day. Official results will be announced on July 3, at 10:00 a.m. Canadian citizens who are at least 18 years of age or older on the date of the election are eligible to vote if they are an resident of one of the electoral divisions.

Three provincial byelections are to be held on June 23 after writs were issued on Monday. Article content Article content Edmonton-Strathcona has been vacant since Rachel Notley stepped down effective Dec. 30, a period of nearly five months, just one shy of the legislated time limit. Article content The riding has had an NDP representative since 1997 and was also the riding of former NDP leader Raj Pannu. Article content The seat for Edmonton-Ellerslie was vacated by the NDP's Rod Loyola, who left to run in last month's federal election after winning three consecutive elections in the constituency. Article content Gurtej Singh Brar is seeking to retain the seat for the NDP and will be most immediately challenged by the UCP's Naresh Bhadwaj, who represented the riding for the former Progressive Conservative Party after winning in the same riding in both 2008 and 2012. Article content Ellerslie is also home to one of two separatist candidates running with the Republican Party of Alberta's Fred Munn, also seeking the seat. Article content Article content The riding has been represented by three different parties since it was first contested in 1993. Article content Article content The seat for Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills had been occupied since 2015 by MLA Nathan Cooper, who is set to depart the province to represent Alberta in Washington. Article content Premier Danielle Smith used a clause in the UCP's constitution to forego an open nomination race and selected Alberta Grains chairperson Tara Sawyer as the party's candidate. Article content The separatist Republican Party's leader Cameron Davies is also set to contest the race, which has been won by candidates for conservative-leaning parties since it was created in 1997. Alberta NDP and UCP nominate candidates for Edmonton-Ellerslie riding
Article content Alberta's two major parties have nominated their candidates for the Edmonton-Ellerslie riding. The riding has been left vacant since March after longtime Alberta NDP member Rod Loyola resigned from his seat to run in the federal 2025 election as the Liberal candidate for Edmonton Gateway, but was removed after a video from 2009 resurfaced in which he praised terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah, while speaking at an anti-NATO protest outside Edmonton City Hall.
