7 arrested after drunken commotion at Pendang festival
PENDANG: Seven people were arrested after videos emerged of partygoers causing a commotion while drunk during a festival celebration at Kampung Peliang on Friday.
In two viral videos, several men were seen misbehaving during the event, with one seen storming the stage and challenging a cop to confront him.
Pendang police chief Superintendent Rodzi Abu Hassan said investigations found the arrested individuals were intoxicated at the time.
He said the police officer, who was targeted during the incident, was at the event to meet a friend and was not under the influence of alcohol.
"The police officer happened to be there to look for a friend. He was not drunk. He helped calm the situation and instructed those causing trouble to proceed to the police station," he told the New Straits Times when contacted.
Rodzi said the case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.
If convicted, offenders could face up to two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both.
