Is Aaron Rodgers Key to Steelers Avoiding Losing Season?
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers after a game on Oct. 20, 2024. -- Ed Thompson / Steelers Now Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Ben Roethlisberger believes that the 2025 season will be the first losing season under head coach Mike Tomlin, if the team is unable to secure the services of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On the latest episode of his Footbahlin podcast on Tuesday, Roethlisberger predicted the Steelers' record with and without Rodgers, who remains a free agent with no update on when or if he might sign with the Steelers, just six days before the start of OTAs. With Rodgers in the fold, Roethlisberger sees the Steelers as an 11-6 team. But if the quarterbacking is left to current starter Mason Rudolph, Roethlisberger sees the Steelers finishing 7-10, for the team's first losing season with Tomlin at the helm. Advertisement But if the Steelers are able to sign Rodgers, as has been widely speculated, Roethlisberger sees them finishing in good shape at 11-6. 'HOF,' he said, referencing Rodgers' future as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. 'That'll get you a few more wins.' Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph in a game against the Cleveland Browns on Jan. 3, 2021. — Ed Thompson / Steelers Now A four-win difference between Rodgers and Rudolph is not crazy, though it should be noted that Rodgers went 6-12 as a starter over the last two seasons with the New York Jets, while Rudolph 4-4 eight starts between Pittsburgh in 2023 and the Tennessee Titans last season. Still, Pittsburgh's quarterback situation appears to be fairly dire if the team is unable to land Rodgers. Pro Football Focus placed Rudolph among the worst quarterbacks in the NFL current in a starting role earlier on Tuesday. Advertisement PFF suggested that the Steelers could start sixth-round rookie Will Howard instead of Rudolph, if they don't end up landing Rodgers. With OTAs starting on Tuesday, it's unclear how much longer the Steelers will be wiling to be patient with Rodgers, who has said that personal issues have kept him from making a decision about his future. Steelers Rookie QB Ready to Fill Massive Shoes
The Pittsburgh Steelers' chase for a franchise quarterback has fallen flat on its face since Ben Roethlisberger retired following the 2021 campaign, but Will Howard plans on filling that void. During an appearance on the "Up and Adams Show" at the NFLPA Rookie Premiere, the sixth-round pick reminisced about watching Roethlisberger play while growing up and said that he wants to become a franchise face with a similarly gritty style for the Steelers. "They need a gritty guy," Howard said. "Growing up, for me, watching the Pittsburgh Steelers, it was Big Ben. And Big Ben, he was that guy. He was Pittsburgh. He was the Steel City, the blue-collar, the gritty guy. I want to be that, too. I want to bring that edge, that energy. I think I did a pretty good job of it at Ohio State, and I like to pride myself on that. I'm gonna try and bring it to the Steel City." Howard will find it tough to work his way onto the field as a rookie if Aaron Rodgers signs with the team, but he can certainly lay the groundwork for a successful career in Pittsburgh by learning from the four-time MVP and treating the upcoming season as a redshirt year of sorts. The 23-year-old accumulated plenty of experience throughout college, first throwing for 5,768 yards and a program-best 48 touchdowns across 27 starts at Kansas State before transferring to Ohio State ahead of the 2024 season. There, he led the Buckeyes to their first national title in a decade while posting 4,010 yards, 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 16 games. Howard has seemingly turned heads within the Steelers' organization following rookie minicamp, and he's even rubbed elbows with Roethlisberger by appearing on his "Footbahlin" podcast while also keeping in contact with him as he becomes acclimated to his new surroundings. There's plenty of hype surrounding Howard in the early goings of his professional career, and he plans on exceeding even the wildest expectations placed upon him. Ravens Legend Offers Shocking QB Opinion
The AFC North holds some bitter rivalries. Maybe no matchup between the four teams holds more meaning than when the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens meet. Which is why it's so shocking when a former player who was involved in that rivalry comes out and has something nice to say about a player on the other side. Advertisement But that's exactly what happened when former Ravens linebacker and two-time Super Bowl champion Terrell Suggs discussed his former rival and Steelers quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, on a recent episode of The Rory and Mal Podcast. "I would say [Ben] Roethlisberger is underrated," Suggs said. "He got more rings than [Aaron] Rodgers. He got more rings than [Drew] Brees. He got like more rings than [Dan] Marino. He's got as many as Peyton and Eli [Manning]. So I would say Roethlisberger, he's probably the most underrated." To say Roethlisberger is "underrated" seems odd, especially since he's typically mentioned with some of the top names to play the position. If you look at the list of names that Suggs mentioned in association with Big Ben, all but one - Eli Manning - are either Hall of Famers or considered sure-fire inductees. Advertisement Rodgers and Brees aren't in yet, but are commonly thought to be first-ballot Hall of Famers when their times come. Manning won two Super Bowls, both over the New England Patriots and Tom Brady, and has a good chance, but isn't considered a lock, and was a finalist for the Class of 2025 but did not receive the necessary votes. Long-time Steelers rival declares Ben Roethlisberger the NFL's most underrated QB
Ben Roethlisberger just received glowing compliments from the most unlikely of people — longtime Steelers rival and Ravens legend Terrell Suggs. According to Suggs, who recently appeared on the New Rory & Mal podcast, Roethlisberger is one of the most underrated QBs in NFL history: Advertisement "I would say Roethlisberger is underrated. He got more rings than Rodgers. He got more rings than Brees. He got more rings than Marino. When you think about it, he's got as many as Peyton and Eli [Manning]. So, I would say Roethlisberger — he's probably the most underrated." Drafted just one year before Roethlisberger by the Ravens in 2003, Suggs and Big Ben's battles helped define the AFC North rivalry for nearly a decade and a half before Suggs ultimately left the Ravens for the Cardinals in 2019. One of the QBs Suggs compared to Big Ben — Aaron Rodgers — could soon find himself donning the legendary Black and Gold of the Pittsburgh Steelers. But there is simply no taking away from what Roethlisberger brought to the Steel City and to the game of football as a whole.
