Religious school teacher in Jasin claims trial for sexually assaulting male student
MELAKA: A 38-year-old religious school teacher from Jasin claimed trial at the Sessions Court in Ayer Keroh here for sexually assaulting a male student. The accused, Muhammad Aiezad Asni, entered his plea before Judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah on Friday (May 30). The accused had allegedly committed sexual assault on a 15‐year‐old boy by rubbing the victim's genital area for sexual purposes. The alleged act took place in the warden's room of a boys' dormitory at a school in the Jasin district, at about 5am on May 23. The charge was framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and may also be subjected to whipping, upon conviction. Earlier, the Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Nazrin Ali Rahim suggested a sum of RM30,000 as bail. The prosecution also requested additional conditions, including a prohibition on the accused from contacting witnesses and to surrender his international passport. The accused's lawyer, Farriz Minarwan Basarudin pleaded for a lower bail amount on the grounds that his client is supporting family members as well as his ageing parents. The court then granted bail to the accused in the sum of RM9,000 and approved the additional conditions requested by the prosecution. The next mention date is set for July 12.

Brothers jailed 45 months each for robbing man from India
MELAKA: Two brothers were each sentenced to 45 months in jail and one stroke of the rotan by the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court today for robbing a man from India in the Ayer Keroh industrial area two years ago. Judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah meted out the sentence after the accused, Muhammad Azmi Osman, 28, and his older brother, Mohd Yusni, 42, changed their plea to guilty during case mention. The court ordered the jail term to begin from the date of their arrest in January 2023. According to the charge, the duo committed gang robbery while armed with a knife and a screwdriver, taking RM900 in cash, a bank card, identification card, and an Indian driving licence belonging to the victim, S. Surendhran. The offence took place at the back of a factory in Ayer Keroh at 1.34pm on Jan 21, 2023. They were charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and whipping upon conviction. Based on the facts of the case, the victim, who was working as a security guard at the time, was attacked by the two armed men while on duty behind the factory. Following the victim's report, the brothers were arrested, and police seized a motorcycle identified by the complainant as being used during the robbery. Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Nazrin Ali Rahim prosecuted the case, while the accused were represented by lawyer Chia Cheng Wee from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
