Why are flags at half-staff on Sunday in Kansas?

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Flags across Kansas are being lowered to half-staff on Sunday. But what's the occasion? Kansas Governor Laura Kelly issued an order last week that flags throughout the State of Kansas be lowered to half-staff from sunup to sundown on Sunday, May 4. This order is meant to honor National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day. 'Our first responders risk their lives every day in service to our communities and Kansans,' Kelly said. 'National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day is a time to honor Kansas firefighters for their tireless work and ensure the ultimate sacrifice that far too many have made will never be forgotten.' Why legalizing weed in Kansas isn't working The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) holds services annually to honor the nation's firefighters such as a memorial service set for 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. CST on May 4. You can find a list of Kansas firefighters in the NFFF's Roll of Honor by clicking here. For more Kansas news, click here. Fairville firefighter who died on duty to be honored in national memorial

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A Fairville firefighter who died while responding to a fire in Arcadia will be honored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation It had been over a year since Daniel Dewolf joined multiple firefighters to fight a fire in Arcadia. While helping at the scene, Dewolf suffered cardiac arrest. First responders tried making life-saving measures, but he passed away at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital. According to the National Firefighters Foundation, the property he was responding to held significance because his own family lived there. He left behind his loving family, both in and out of the department. Dewolf will be included in the 2025 Roll of Honor for the National Fallen Firefighters, which includes 70 firefighters who died in 2024 and 70 more who died in previous years. A full list of firefighters being honored on the memorial can be found here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This year's host pastor will be the Rev. Canon Helen O. Harper. This year's speaker will be state Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt. Senator Ortt, who represents the 62nd Senate District, which covers all of Niagara and Orleans counties, was sworn into office in January 2015 and was elected minority leader by Senate Republicans in 2020. The New York Army National Guard veteran was awarded the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Afghan Campaign Medal and Combat Infantryman's Badge in recognition of his service during Operation Enduring Freedom.
