Grape tomatoes are more elongated than round and also less sweet than cherry tomatoes. 5. Pear Tomatoes Shaped like tiny teardrops, pear tomatoes come in red, yellow and orange varieties. Their mild, slightly tangy flavour pairs well with cheese platters or salads. They can also be used as a colourful addition to dishes. 6. Green Tomatoes As the name suggests, these tomatoes are the ones that haven't fully ripened. They are firm in texture and known for their tart flavour. Aussies jobs at risk as 2,240 per cent jump in controversial tax pushes business to verge of collapse

An Australian small business owner is fearing the worst after copping a horrendous price hike. The Victorian land tax has attracted criticism from property owners big and small as the levy has been hiked significantly in recent years to help the southern state get on top of its debts. Angie Romas had to pay $8,700 in land tax 10 years ago for the four-acre block in Dandenong South where his sandblasting and painting business sits. Fast forward to now, and that bill for DH Corrosion & DPC Coatings has shot up to $203,600. That's an increase of 2,240 per cent in a decade, and he said the bill will increase by $50,000 every year going forward. Infuriating tax the 'final straw' for Aussie landlords: 'From $307 to $3,096' Centrelink issues urgent Age Pension eligibility change warning: 'Double check' Dad with no savings reveals surprising money message for struggling Aussies: 'Living pay to pay' "We're being punished for just being here," he told A Current Affair. "We don't mind paying a nominal land tax. Everybody does, but this is become out of bounds now. Increasing by 23 times in 10 years. It's crazy." His business has been involved in getting huge support beams and structures installed for state projects like highways and stadiums like the has been doing this job for 23 years and said if nothing is done about the tax, they have two options. He could either move his warehouse to a different area where the tax could be smaller, or he would shut up shop for good. If he chooses the latter option, more than a dozen people will lose their jobs and Romas fears the work he does for the state government will eventually be outsourced overseas to Asia or the Middle East. Victoria's Treasurer Jaclyn Symes wasn't swayed when confronted with Romas' story and his 2,240 per cent increase in his bill. She said while the land tax can put a squeeze on some businesses and property owners, it's for the good of the state. 'We want to ensure that we get the balance right in relation to the levies and taxes that people pay, we want to ensure that we have the revenue for the services that Victorians rely on to be delivered,' she said. 'We don't want impacts on those that are suffering cost of living pressures, ordinary households and the like, that's why we set our tax settings with consideration of those that have the greater capacity to pay.' The state government pulled in $5.2 billion in the 2022-23 year from land tax. The controversial levy is predicted to bring in $9.3 billion for the 2027-28 year. It's the state's mission to curtail its growing debt problem, which is expected to reach $187.8 billion in June 2028. The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is pleading with the state government to address taxes that are hurting businesses like Romas'. It feared taxing small enterprises, especially ones doing work for the Victorian government, is "dampening" their growth and investment. "The business community is already wearing both the mental health levy and the Covid debt levy, both of which have had a significant financial impact," the Chamber said in a submission. Chamber's chief executive, Paul Guerra, added that the land tax was 'pushing costs to unsustainable levels, stalling investment, slowing transactions and choking growth". It's not just business groups affected by the land tax either. Property investors like Garry Salathiel also cop the controversial levy and he told Yahoo Finance it almost makes it impossible to keep up. In three years, his tax bill went from $397 to $3,096, which "absolutely floored" him when it came in the mail. He said he would have no choice but to pass on those costs to his tenants and could even be forced to sell at least one of his two homes to ensure he had enough money to retire. 'I'm just giving heaps and heaps and heaps of it away to the government for nothing," he said. "I'm paying a real estate agent, I'm paying the council, I'm paying insurance, I'm paying the land tax. There's nothing left." Figures were released late last year showing that one in three unpaid land tax bills were more than 12 months overdue, indicating some were struggling to keep up with the levies or were outright refusing to pay. "It should be no surprise that so many Victorians are under extreme financial pressure and struggling to pay on time," Nationals' Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, said. 'This data provided by Department of Treasury and Finance highlights the unachievable financial expectations from the government when they are taxing Victorians to the max."Sign in to access your portfolio
