WI Assembly passes bill requiring sheriffs to cooperate with ICE
MADISON, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – A Republican bill requiring Wisconsin Sheriffs to aid ICE or otherwise risk their funding passed the Assembly. The bill would require sheriffs to verify the citizenship status of people they've detained for felony offenses. If the sheriff can't verify citizenship status, they would have to alert the Department of Homeland Security. If sheriffs don't comply with this bill, their counties would lose 15% of state aid. In some counties, that loss would amount to more than $1 million.
Republican State Representative Ron Tusler of Harrison said, 'Don't let the cartels, the NGOs and illegal migrants, ruin it for the legal immigrants we help. Wisconsin sheriffs should follow the law. Please vote green.'
Democratic Minority Assembly Leader, Greta Neubauer of Racine said, 'After years of asking local communities to do more with less, it is unacceptable to threaten those vital funds for a political stunt.'
The bill passed 51-43 with Democrats voting against it. The bill will now head to the State Senate. If it passes there, Democratic Governor Tony Evers has already indicated he would veto the bill
