Netanyahu says Israel accepts Witkoff's new Gaza truce proposal, media report

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks during a press conference, in Jerusalem, May 21, 2025. REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun/Pool/ File Photo Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told families of hostages held in Gaza that Israel has accepted a new ceasefire proposal presented by U.S. President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, Israeli media reported on Thursday. Channel 12, Kann, I24 and Haaretz were among the Israeli media outlets that reported the claim. Netanyahu's office later issued a statement calling Channel 12 a "propaganda channel" and accused one of its reporters of trying to "smuggle" a recording device into the prime minister's office ahead of his meeting with families of hostages. The statement did not issue a direct denial of the reports. There was no immediate response from Channel 12. A Palestinian official familiar with the mediation efforts told Reuters "the discussions are continuing with the mediators and Hamas hasn't handed its response yet." Gaza's dominant Palestinian militant group, at war with Israel since October 2023, had earlier said that it received the new proposal from mediators and was studying it. UN Humanitarian Office Says Around 100 Aid Trucks Approved To Enter Gaza

Trucks carrying aid, arrive at the Kerem Shalom crossing, as they make their way into Gaza, May 19, 2025. REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun GENEVA, May 20 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- The United Nations (UN) humanitarian affairs office on Tuesday said the entry of around 100 trucks carrying aid into Gaza marked a significant increase from the nine cleared the day before. "We have requested and received approval for more trucks to enter today. Many more than were approved yesterday," Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told reporters in Geneva, Anadolu Ajansi reported. "And we expect, of course, with that approval, many of them—hopefully all of them—to cross today to a point where they can be picked up and get further into the Gaza Strip for distribution," Laerke said. bootstrap slideshow When asked for a specific number, he said the figure was "around 100." The announcement came a day after just nine aid trucks were cleared for entry into Gaza via the Kerem Shalom crossing on Monday—a number that OCHA and other aid groups have repeatedly said is far below what is needed to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of Gaza's population. Of the nine trucks cleared Monday, Laerke said only five were actually able to move into Gaza due to logistical challenges at the crossing. 'Out of those nine, five of them actually crossed into Gaza … for logistical reasons. Four of them were not able to enter,' he said, explaining that the crossing involves a complex transfer process. 'As you know, the crossing has different stages, and there is a repacking … from one set of trucks to another set of trucks before it can move in.' Even the five trucks that crossed Monday have yet to be fully released for delivery, Laerke noted, due to ongoing control measures by Israeli authorities. "So it moved from different levels of Israeli control. The last level where the five trucks entered is still under Israeli control, and we need permission to pick it up."

Israel says it intercepted a missile from Yemen, Houthis claim responsibility

People take cover, while sirens sound in Jerusalem, May 13, 2025. Israel's military reported that a missile was launched from Yemen towards Israel and was intercepted. REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun Israel says it intercepted a missile from Yemen, Houthis claim responsibility DUBAI - The Israeli military said on Wednesday that it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen towards its territory. The launch coincides with U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to the Gulf. Trump has announced that he reached a ceasefire with Yemen's Houthis that will halt attacks on U.S. vessels. The Iran-aligned group fired a missile towards Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv, according to the group's military spokesperson Yahya Saree. Trump announced early in May that the U.S. would stop bombing the Houthis in Yemen as the group had agreed to stop attacking U.S. ships. The Houthis said they will continue to fire missiles and drones towards Israel. The Houthis have attacked numerous vessels in the Red Sea, disrupting global trade, in a campaign that they say is aimed at showing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Israel has been fighting a war in Gaza since a deadly raid by Palestinian militant group Hamas into southern Israel in October 2023. Israel's defence minister warns Yemen's Houthis of heavy retaliation

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz looks on, amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, in Jerusalem, November 7, 2024. REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun/File Photo Israel's defence minister on Thursday warned Yemen's Houthis will suffer heavy blows if they continue to fire at Israel and that its defence forces are prepared for any mission. U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday the U.S. would stop bombing the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen, saying that the group had agreed to stop attacking U.S. ships. A ceasefire deal between Yemen's Houthis and the U.S. does not include sparing Israel, the Houthis said on Wednesday, later saying they targeted Israel with drones. "Israel must be able to defend itself on its own against any threat and any enemy," Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a statement on X. "The Houthis will suffer heavy blows from Israel if they continue to fire at us. The IDF (Israel Defence Force) is prepared for any mission. Katz also cautioned the Iranian leadership, which he accused of financing and arming the Houthi organisation, declaring that the proxy system is over and "the axis of evil has collapsed." He stated that Iran bears direct responsibility and warned that actions similar to those taken against Hezbollah in Beirut, Hamas in Gaza, Assad in Damascus, and the Houthis in Yemen could be carried out in Tehran.
