Barry Jenkins to direct ‘Be My Baby' biopic starring Zendaya: reports
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — An Academy-Award winning director has agreed to helm a biopic featuring the life and times of Veronica Yvette Bennett, also known as Ronnie Spector, who fronted the Ronettes.
According to Deadline, Barry Jenkins ('Moonlight,' and 'Mufasa: The Lion King') will direct the feature in collaboration with film production and distribution company A24.
Zendaya (who's co-producing the projecting) was already set to lead the film, with her portrayal of Spector, a deal that has been in the works since September 2020. Before her passing in 2022, Spector picked Zendaya as the best choice to play her in the biopic.
The film will be written by Ohio-born screenwriter Dave Kajganich ('Bones and All').
The biopic is currently titled, 'Be My Baby,' based off the 1963 single from The Ronettes.
