Local officials are investigating the discovery of 14 stolen cattle, including eight dead cows, found in an abandoned trailer, according to the Houston County Sheriff's Office.
In a Facebook post detailing the incident, the sheriff's office said it received a call about an abandoned trailer on Highway 19 South. Upon arrival, officers discovered 14 Angus cattle, eight of which were dead, inside the 20-foot trailer.
Officers determined the cattle had been stolen, and the case is being investigated for both theft and "cruelty to livestock."
The cattle's owner has been notified, and the sheriff's office confirmed on the Facebook post that it is working with Special Ranger Darrell Bobbitt of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association to resolve the case.
The sheriff's office thanked local cowboys Ronnie Goolsby and Klay Currie, as well as the local Texas Department of Transportation office, for their assistance in moving the live cattle and disposing of the dead ones.
"This type of activity will not be tolerated, and we will do everything we can to hold these thieves and abusers accountable," the sheriff's office stated.
