Six-year-old launches ‘tree school nursery' on World Environment Day

As part of the World Environment Day celebrations, Roohi Mohazzan, a six-year-old environmental activist, launched the 'Tree School Nursery,' an eco-friendly initiative at the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School for Girls, Nadakkavu, in Kozhikode on Thursday (June 5). Roohi, accompanied by lyricist Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri, inaugurated the project by planting tree saplings on the campus. This ambitious endeavour has been aimed at empowering students to plant one crore trees across the country. Faizal and Shabana Foundation, a philanthropic organisation known for transforming the Nadakkavu school into a model for government schools throughout the State, is supporting the initiative. A press release said that Roohi had previously participated in tree-planting drives to combat landslides in Wayanad and had petitioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi to advocate for printing passports on recycled paper. Her handwritten petitions to lawmakers underscore her belief that this simple change can raise public awareness about deforestation. The daughter of Abdul Gani and Aneesa Muhammed, residents of Parambil Bazaar, Roohi was instilled with a passion for environmental conservation from a young age. Her parents' practice of buying notebooks made from recycled newspapers deeply inspired her to take her own proactive steps as an eco-warrior. Government Vocational Higher Secondary School for Girls, Nadakkavu, Principal Gireesh Kumar and headmaster Premachandran participated in the inaugural function.
