Saints Draft Pick Tyler Shough Among Favorites For 2025 NFL Rookie Of The Year

New Orleans Saints draft choice Tyler Shough was the third quarterback chosen in the 2025 NFL Draft. Shough was only the second quarterback the Saints have ever selected in the first or second round in their 58-year history. Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward was picked first overall by the Tennessee Titans. The New York Giants then traded back into the first round to nab Mississippi quarterback Jaxson Dart at 25th overall. Mandatory Credit: Ken Ruinard-Imagn Images Shough, who turns 26 in September, isn't expected to be automatically named the New Orleans starter. Because of his draft status, he's the early frontrunner in what will likely be a competition with second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler. Shough is also among the (very) early favorites for Offensive Rookie of the Year. Immediately after the draft, Shough was installed as having the seventh-highest odds for Rookie of the Year by Fan Duel Sportsbook. In place since 1967, the Saints have had four players win Rookie of the Year honors, with three on the offensive side. It is the only time in their franchise history that New Orleans selected first overall. Advertisement Rogers would have a historic campaign for the Saints as a rookie in 1981. He led the NFL with 1,674 rushing yards and 378 rushing attempts, with his 13 rushing touchdowns finishing second in the league. Rogers still holds the franchise record for both rushing yards and attempts in a single season. He won the 1981 Offensive Rookie of the Year award by taking 65 (77.4%) of the potential Associated Press votes. Mandatory Credit: Peter Brouillet-USA TODAY NETWORK After rushing for 2,873 yards over his last two seasons at Washington State, the Saints selected Mayes in the third round of the 1986 NFL Draft. Rogers had been traded by New Orleans two years before, so the door was left open for Mayes to grab a primary role in the backfield. Advertisement Mayes was one of the surprises of the 1986 season, rushing for 1,353 yards to lead New Orleans and finish fourth in the league while adding 8 touchdowns. He became only the third back in Saints franchise history to rush for over 1,000 yards and remains one of just seven backs to do so. Mayes was the 13th running back drafted in 1986 and second by his own team behind second-round choice Dalton Hilliard. He'd go on to win the 1986 Rookie of the Year by taking 88.1% of the votes, with no other player getting more than 1 vote to his 74. Alvin Kamara, RB (2017) Nov 19, 2017; New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara (41) runs through the Washington Redskins defense. Mandatory Credit: Chuck Cook-Imagn Images Saints coach Sean Payton fell in love with Kamara during the 2017 pre-draft process and took the Tennessee product with a third-round choice. After a slow start to his rookie year, Kamara caught fire and has become one of the most popular players in franchise history. Advertisement As a rookie, Kamara rushed for 728 yards and added 81 receptions for 826 yards while scoring 12 touchdowns. His 1,901 all-purpose yards was third in the league as he led all rookie backs in receiving production. The 2017 NFL Draft was rich in running back talent, but Kamara has been the best all-around threat of the group. He was the fifth back chosen that season and won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award by narrowly edging out fellow running back Kareem Hunt. Kamara took 28 of 50 possible votes, with Hunt taking 21. Mandatory Credit: Scott Clause/The Daily Advertiser via USA TODAY NETWORK The 11th overall choice in a star-studded 2017 draft, Ohio State product Lattimore was the first cornerback off the board. He's tied with Alex Molden (1986) as the only corners ever chosen by the Saints in the first round of the draft. Advertisement Lattimore was an instant sensation. He'd almost immediately become one of the top shutdown corners in the NFL and remained so for several years. In 2017, he intercepted 5 passes and broke up 18 others while elevating the defense by bottling up many of the league's top wideouts. Lattimore took 45 of a possible 50 votes (90%) for 2017 Defensive Rookie of the Year. He remains the only defensive player for New Orleans to take the honor. OKC's Sam Presti picked as the NBA's executive of the year

Sam Presti of the Oklahoma City Thunder was announced Tuesday as the NBA's executive of the year, the reward for building that team into a juggernaut that won a league-best 68 games this season. It is Presti's first time winning the award and the first time since 1994 that the franchise — which was then called the Seattle SuperSonics — had its top executive voted as the winner. Bob Whitsitt won it that season. Presti, the Thunder's executive vice president and general manager, got 10 first-place votes from a panel of 30 basketball executives — one from each of the NBA's teams — who ranked their top three choices in order. Presti appeared on 22 of those 30 ballots. 'I look at it like it's a tremendous privilege to be able to do it,' Presti said at the start of the season when asked about his job. 'Eventually someone else is going to be the person that's doing it, and for me, while I'm serving the position, I think I've said this in the past, it's not my job, it's the Thunder's job. I'm just serving the position the best that I can and hopefully doing a good job with it for as many people as possible, and I enjoy it.' Cleveland's Koby Altman was second with six first-place votes, after the Cavaliers won 64 games and finished atop the Eastern Conference standings. Detroit's Trajan Langdon also got six first-place votes and was third, after the Pistons went from a 14-win team to a 44-win playoff team in his first year leading that front office. Houston's Rafael Stone (four first-place votes) was fourth, the Los Angeles Clippers' Lawrence Frank (one first-place vote) was fifth and the Los Angeles Lakers' Rob Pelinka (also one first-place vote) was sixth. Pelinka engineered the biggest trade of the season, the one that brought Luka Doncic to the Lakers from the Dallas Mavericks — but was listed on only five of the 30 ballots cast. Golden State's Mike Dunleavy was seventh, Brooklyn's Sean Marks and 2024 award winner Brad Stevens of the Boston Celtics (both of whom got one first-place vote) tied for eighth, and New York's Leon Rose was 10th. Sacramento's Monte McNair was 11th, while Orlando's Jeff Weltman and San Antonio's Brian Wright tied for 12th. The executive of the year award is not like most NBA season honors that are voted on by a global panel of 100 writers and broadcasters who cover the league and cast ballots shortly after the end of the regular season. Awards that were part of that voting process and have already had their results unveiled: Cleveland's Kenny Atkinson winning Coach of the Year, Atlanta's Dyson Daniels winning Most Improved Player, San Antonio's Stephon Castle winning Rookie of the Year, Cleveland's Evan Mobley winning Defensive Player of the Year, New York's Jalen Brunson winning Clutch Player of the Year, and Boston's Payton Pritchard winning Sixth Man of the Year. Other awards announced by the league since the end of the regular season: Golden State's Stephen Curry won the Twyman-Stokes teammate of the year award, Warriors teammate Draymond Green won the hustle award and Boston's Jrue Holiday won the sportsmanship award for the second time in his career. The league's social justice champion will be revealed Wednesday. Major awards that will be announced later in the playoffs include MVP (either Oklahoma City's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Denver's Nikola Jokic or Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo), plus the All-NBA, All-Rookie and All-Defensive teams. ___

2025 NFL odds: Back Rams to win NFC West, Steelers win total Under

Now that the 2025 NFL Draft has wrapped up, and all 257 players have been selected, it's time to look ahead to the time when the players actually take the field. With that being said, let's take a look at three bets I like for the upcoming NFL season. Los Angeles Rams to win NFC West In Sean McVay's eight seasons as head coach of the Rams, he has led the team to four division titles, including two out of three seasons with a healthy Matt Stafford at quarterback. The 2024 season was supposed to be a reset for the Rams, as they got younger on defense and did some offensive line shuffling. Instead of losing while being young, the Rams ended up winning the division and, in driving snow, were a play away from taking a late lead against the Eagles in the divisional round. This Rams team will be a year older and wiser, which will lead to more consistent play all around. It is going to win a bunch of games. Meanwhile, the Rams' biggest rival for top dog in the division has gotten worse. The 49ers had a dreadful 2024 season with injuries, and while it's fair to assume they will have better injury luck, their roster is not as good this season. San Fran's star players are aging, and the team has not drafted well enough to replace players it lost to free agency. The Seahawks are going through a transition at quarterback, and the Cardinals aren't good enough to compete in the division. I like the value on the Rams winning the division now. PICK: Los Angeles Rams (+185) to win NFC West Omarion Hampton for Offensive Rookie of the Year The Chargers drafted Hampton, and I love the potential for a big rookie season in Los Angeles. Hampton will have the opportunity to be a huge part of the offense with his ability to both rush and receive the ball. The Chargers' two running backs last season combined for nearly 300 carries. While the franchise did sign Najee Harris to take some of those carries, he's just not as explosive as Hampton. As the season progresses, Hampton will become the focal point. The Chargers run game wears down opponents, and we saw last season that L.A. was able to finish games with long, explosive runs. Those runs will now be carried by Hampton, and those highlight plays will help voters take notice of him. The biggest competition for this award will be his fellow rookie running back in the division, Ashton Jeanty. He might have flashy plays, but he'll be playing for a losing team. Hampton being on a winning team should help. PICK: Omarion Hampton (+1600) to win OROY Pittsburgh Steelers Under 8.5 wins Did you know the Steelers have not finished under .500 in a single season under head coach Mike Tomlin? Who knew? But I think that streak is coming to an end this season, as the Steelers will win just eight games. Pittsburgh's schedule is difficult, with their division games, plus games against the NFC North and the AFC East. It won't be favored in many of those, plus it plays the Chargers, who are likely to be a 10-win team this season. And yes, I know the Steelers tend to have voodoo magic in these games to keep them close, and maybe I will get burned again this season with their win total Under, but I'm willing to wager on it and see. The Steelers entered the draft last week needing a starting quarterback and came out still needing one. Despite their current QB room being Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson, the organization passed on talent like Shedeur Sanders and instead built up the roster with what they felt were the best players available. That would be a fine draft strategy … for a team that already has a quarterback. Maybe the Steelers get Aaron Rodgers to finally agree to play on their squad, but that isn't changing my bet. Rodgers is average at best, and I do not like the design of the Steelers offense. Relying on Rodgers to be the franchise QB isn't smart ball. So, I'm going to fade the Steelers this year. Maybe I'll finally be right this season. PICK: Pittsburgh Steelers Under 8.5 wins Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
