India Launches Mission for Global Sustainable Fashion Role
On World Environment Day, the International Fashion Business Exchange Council (IFBEC) officially launched the National Mission Committee (NMC) at the World Trade Center, Mumbai, taking a decisive step toward positioning India as the Responsible Fashion Business Capital of the World by 2030.
The launch brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and sustainability advocates, including Smt. Roop Rashi Mahapatra, CEO of KVIC, alongside representatives from Reliance Industries, Bestseller, IDH, United Way Mumbai, WTC, and various academic, government, and civil society institutions.
The newly formed National Mission Committee will serve as the strategic backbone of IFBEC's sustainability goals, focused on aligning India's textile and fashion industries with global standards. Its key mandates include:
Promoting circular fashion and textile innovation
Facilitating sustainable international trade practices
practices Empowering SMEs and artisans for global access
for global access Developing financial and regulatory systems that support ethical production
Smt. Roop Rashi Mahapatra emphasized:
'India is naturally circular by culture. We must reclaim that ethos. Textile waste must be seen as potential, not pollution. True change starts from the ground up—only then will policy create lasting impact.'
Neha Gupta, Founder of IFBEC, added:
'The NMC is more than a committee; it's a national call to action—uniting institutions and innovators under a common goal of measurable sustainability in fashion.'
The event echoed the urgency of climate-conscious transformation in the fashion industry and the need for collaborative efforts across value chains.
Mr. Harshavardhan Chauhan, visionary behind Bharat YEF, stated:
'This is not just about textiles. It's about India's future. Circularity is dharma—where innovation respects the environment. This mission declares that India will no longer be stitched into someone else's story—it will craft its own.'
With the NMC in place, India signals a shift from volume to value, from linear to circular, from tradition to transformative leadership. This initiative marks a turning point—defining India's new identity in the global sustainable fashion dialogue.
