Valeo 2024 London Law Firm Hourly Rate Report: Details Average Billing Rates by Position and Practice Area in London's Legal Market
Report Offers Unprecedented Transparency into London Law Firm Rates Using Court-Cited Public Data, Including Including Cleary, Paul Weiss, DLA Piper, and Ropes & Gray Dublin, May 29, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The "Valeo 2024 London Law Firm Hourly Rate Report" has been added to offering. The 2024 London Law Firm Hourly Rate Report details the average hourly rates by Position (Senior Partner - 25 years or more since graduation year, Partner - 24 years or less, Counsel, Senior Associate - 5 years or more, and Associate - 4 years or less) of the major law firms practicing in London by principal litigation and transactional practice areas. The rate data and related details of this Report were taken directly from the Valeo Attorney Hourly Rate and LPM Pricing Platform. Research and Reporting Methodology The publisher researches, reviews and analyzes hourly rates that are publicly disclosed of attorneys and support staff at currently 2,500 law firms representing over 20,000 companies. Secondary public records research is performed to complete detailed engagement profiles of the attorneys and companies involved. Through this process we are able to provide actionable data to our user community - large law firms, corporations and consulting firms to make 1) direct comparisons between attorneys and firms (as opposed to general averages of a collection of various firms' rates as found in surveys or e-billing services) and 2) important pricing and strategy decisions enterprise-wide or engagement-by-engagement. In the Valeo Attorney Hourly Rates and LPM Pricing Platform, all hourly rates, hours and fees for each individual attorney are cited as to the source. For example, the citation for a court filing includes: case name, case number, court, case filing date, filing number, filing description, attorney and support staff listed by full name, client name, hourly rate of each timekeeper, hours billed, total hours and the time period in which the work was performed. As mentioned, further secondary research is required to confirm experience levels (graduation and bar licensure years), bar state (in the United States) or bar country (outside of the United States), practice area(s) and primary industry of the client. All data for the Valeo Analytical Reports is downloaded from the Platform and rates are listed as Average Billed Rates by Firm, Position (Senior Partner, Partner, Counsel, Senior Associate, Associate and Support Staff), Practice(s) and Rate Year. In order to provide this detailed level of clarity and transparency, the publisher researches 1) public records in US State Courts, US Supreme Court, US Federal Courts - District, Appellate, Federal Circuit and Bankruptcy 2) publicly available budgets from municipalities, districts (school, water, environmental and others), counties and states where attorneys were hired to perform legal work for the public entity 3) registrations such SEC records and other publicly disclosed documents and 4) government affairs fees. The practice of law is global and although most hourly rate data is from public sources in the United States, the publisher captures hourly rates for attorneys in 62 countries and denominated in 11 currencies. Since the publisher researches, reviews and analyzes only publicly available information and cites the source of the information, the United States federal and state court systems easily recognize and accept the validity and veracity of the data in court. the data has been used and cited in several hundred United States federal and state court cases including the Supreme Court of the United States (Kirtsaeng v. John Wiley Publishing), Federal District Courts (The United States v. Apple), Appellate Courts including the Federal Circuit, Federal Bankruptcy (AMR Corporation, Chapter 11 bankruptcy case) and Adversary proceedings and major state courts mainly in California, Texas and New York. Some New England law firms fall in national AmLaw revenue rankings
The biggest law firms in Rhode Island and Massachusetts are also some of the top money-making ones in the U.S. Sixteen of the 20 Massachusetts firms with the most attorneys rank among the country's 200 with the most 2024 revenue, according to Business First research and information released this week by American Lawyer magazine. Several of the top earners also have major presences in Rhode Island, including Nixon Peabody, which repeated at No. 90 among the AmLaw 200, with revenue last year of $621 million. GET TO KNOW YOUR CITY Find Local Events Near You Connect with a community of local professionals. Explore All Events The firm is headquartered in Boston and has 15 offices around the world, including one at Citizens Plaza in Providence. Another Rhode Island firm on the AmLaw 200 list this year is Dallas-based Locke Lord, which also has an office in Providence and last year had $523 million in revenue nationwide. Earlier this year, the firm merged with Troutman Pepper, headquartered in Atlanta and ranked No. 52 on the AmLaw list. In what may be a sign of growing national competition, only two of the 16 Massachusetts firms saw their rankings on the AmLaw 200 rise since the previous roster. The largest firm in the Bay State, Boston-based Ropes & Gray, recorded 2024 revenue of $3.42 billion nationwide and climbed from eighth to seventh among the AmLaw 200. Proskauer Rose, which is headquartered in New York and the 14th-largest firm in Massachusetts, had revenue of $1.39 billion. That pushed the firm up a notch from No. 42 to No. 41 on the list. Other top firms fell or stayed flat on the revenue ranking — despite some of them bringing in more money during 2024 than before. The fifth-largest Massachusetts firm, Choate Hall & Stewart, reported revenue of $379 million in 2024, up 16% from the 2023 total. Yet the firm's rank remains the same, No. 119. The sixth-largest firm, Foley Hoag, had revenue last year of $326 million, a 7.8% increase, according to American Lawyer. But the firm's rank on the AmLaw 200 has declined from No. 125 to No. 132. Among the 20 largest Bay State firms, Goulston & Storrs tumbled the most in revenue rank, from No. 154 on the previous AmLaw list to No. 164 this year. The firm brought in revenue of $227 million during 2024, down 4.4% from the prior-year total. Sign up for Providence Business First's free daily newsletter here Nationwide, the law firm that grossed the most last year was Chicago-based Kirkland & Ellis, whose revenue totaled $8.8 billion. Kirkland's 148-lawyer office in Boston makes the firm the 10th-largest in Massachusetts. Kirkland employs more than 4,000 lawyers nationwide. Ropes & Gray, by comparison, employed 576 Massachusetts lawyers last year, about a third of the firm's total. The Business Journal contacted several of the top-ranked firms for comment, but none were willing to discuss their revenues on the record. The revenue rankings come out as some of the top earners battle growing criticism from the administration of President Donald Trump. WilmerHale, headquartered in Boston and Washington, D.C., is one of several Big Law firms hit recently with presidential sanctions — and that has sued the administration in response. WilmerHale ranks as the fourth-largest Massachusetts law firm by local lawyer headcount, and No. 34 nationally based on revenue of $1.6 billion, according to AmLaw. Last year, the firm ranked No. 31. It's estimated there are more than 460,000 law firms in the U.S. Among the 50 states, Massachusetts is home to the second-largest number of attorneys per capita, after New York, according to the American Bar Association. Kirkland & Ellis emerges as leading M&A legal adviser in North America for Q1 2025
Kirkland & Ellis has emerged as the foremost mergers and acquisitions (M&A) legal adviser in terms of value and volume in North America for the first quarter of 2025, according to GlobalData's latest legal advisers league table. GlobalData ranks legal advisers by the value and volume of M&A deals on which they advised. According to GlobalData's Deals Database, Kirkland & Ellis secured its top position by advising on 96 deals with a total value of $90bn during the first quarter of 2025. GlobalData lead analyst Aurojyoti Bose said: 'Kirkland & Ellis was the clear winner, outpacing its peers by a significant margin in terms of deal volume as well as value during Q1 2025. It just fell shy of hitting the triple-digit deal volume during Q1 2025. It is also interesting to note that Kirkland & Ellis was also the top adviser by volume in Q1 2024. 'Kirkland & Ellis also stayed much ahead of its peers in terms of value as well. It went ahead from occupying the fourth position by value in Q1 2024 to top the chart by this metric in Q1 2025 as there was a significant growth in the total value of deals advised by it driven by some big-ticket deals. During Q1 2025, it advised on 18 billion-dollar deals* that also included two mega deals valued more than $10bn. Its significance can be understood from the fact that these 18 deals collectively accounted for more than $83bn.' In terms of value, Davis Polk & Wardwell ranked second, advising on deals worth $68.9bn, followed by Cravath Swaine & Moore with $57.6bn, Ropes & Gray with $56.3bn, and Debevoise & Plimpton with $44.9bn. When considering the volume of deals, Latham & Watkins took the second spot with 56 transactions, followed by Ropes & Gray with 42 deals, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett with 31 deals, and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher also with 31 deals. GlobalData's league tables are based on the real-time tracking of thousands of company websites, advisory firm websites and other reliable sources available on the secondary domain. A dedicated team of analysts monitors all these sources to gather in-depth details for each deal, including adviser names. To ensure further robustness to the data, the company also seeks submissions of deals from leading advisers. Two Boston law firms among those targeted by Trump Administration for DEI practices
Advertisement Goodwin Procter and Ropes & Gray did not respond to requests for comment. A spokesperson from the EEOC declined to comment on how or why these firms were identified. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law condemned the move and argued Lucas does not have the authority to speak on behalf of the EEOC, which currently has only two commissioners after Trump 'Lucas' letters are not charges of discrimination,' the lawyer's committee said in a statement Tuesday. 'As such, they carry no more weight of authority than if they had been written on a cocktail napkin by any member of the public.' Federal officials claimed in the letters that the 20 law firm's DEI initiatives are counter to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits employment discrimination based on protected classes such as race, sex, and religion, among other identities. Erika George, an associate dean and a professor at Boston University School of Law, called the move a 'reverse jiu jitsu inversion of that intention' that is not operating in good faith. The EEOC specifically asked the firms to provide spreadsheets of law students who applied to diversity internships and fellowships, as well as lawyers who were considered to become partner. Among the data requested by federal officials are applicants' names, sex, race, phone number, email address, their law school, and school GPA, as well as any bonuses, compensation, or promotions they received. Advertisement Firms were also asked to share their recruitment practices for the hiring of diverse applicants and information on internal affinity or resource groups for staff. Kenneth Mack, a professor of law and affiliate professor of history at Harvard University, said such information should be considered private by these firms. 'This appears to be a fishing exposition directed at just forcing law firms to cough up as much individual, personal information, particularly about women and people of color, as the EEOC can wring out of them,' he said, calling the move deeply problematic. This is not the first time Trump has specifically gone after law firms he viewed as adversarial. Earlier this month, the president signed an Associates at some of these major law firms are circulating an open 'Trump is taking an enormous gamble by targeting some of the most powerful lawyers in the country first. With effective coordination, we could easily resist him. But as yet, his gamble is paying off,' wrote Rachel Cohen, an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom who is based in Chicago. 'I will not watch the legal system collapse from my window office 4,000 feet off the ground and stay silent out of fear,' Cohen wrote in a LinkedIn post. Law firms stock up on Biden-era US attorneys
March 4 (Reuters) - At least six former U.S. attorneys who served during the Democratic Biden administration took new jobs at private law firms this week, including the former top federal prosecutors in Boston and Houston. Joshua Levy, the former U.S. attorney for Massachusetts, will rejoin Ropes & Gray as a partner on March 31 after resigning ahead of Republican President Donald Trump's return to office, the law firm said Tuesday. Under Levy's supervision, the U.S. attorney's office pursued charges against the operators of a high-end brothel network whose customers included elected officials, corporate executives and lawyers, and helped obtain a $650 million deferred prosecution agreement with McKinsey & Co over its role in the U.S. opioid epidemic. Also on Tuesday, Houston-founded law firm Bracewell said it hired Alamdar Hamdani, former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Texas under Biden. Hamdani brought criminal charges against a Texas doctor and self-described whistleblower on transgender care for minors, after the doctor was accused of illegally gaining access to records about patients not under his care at Texas Children's Hospital. The doctor's prosecution was sharply criticized by conservatives, and the charges were dropped days after Trump took office. McGuireWoods said Monday it hired three former U.S. attorneys – Eric Olshan, of the Western District of Pennsylvania; Ryan Buchanan, of the Northern District of Georgia; and Michael Easley, of the Eastern District of North Carolina – as partners. Olshan oversaw the trial of Robert Bowers, who was convicted and sentenced to death for killing 11 worshippers at Pittsburgh's Tree of Life synagogue in 2018, the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history. Trina Higgins, the former Utah U.S. attorney, joined Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati as an of counsel, the firm said Tuesday. Edward Kim, who served as the acting U.S. attorney in Manhattan following the resignation of Damian Williams in December, rejoined the private law firm he co-founded, KKL. The firm, previously known as Krieger Lewin, announced Kim's return and its name change on Monday. It is common for U.S. attorneys and other political appointees to move to the private sector when a new political party assumes the White House. Other government lawyers have taken positions since Trump took office at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton; Cravath, Swaine & Moore; King & Spalding; Latham & Watkins; Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison; Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan; Sidley Austin; Weil, Gotshal & Manges; and WilmerHale, among other firms.
