Xaud elected president of Brazil's CBF after predecessor removed by court
RIO DE JANEIRO, May 25 (Reuters) - Samir Xaud was elected as head of Brazil's football confederation (CBF) on Sunday, after Ednaldo Rodrigues was removed from the position by a Rio de Janeiro court. The election took place a day before the new Brazilian national team coach, Italian Carlo Ancelotti, was due to be presented. "We have started a new phase at the CBF. Our administration will be marked by the renewal of ideas and the full development of sport," Xaud, a medical doctor, said in his inaugural speech. Xaud, the only candidate and president-elect of the Roraima state football federation, received 101 of the 143 possible votes and was elected with the strong support of the state federations. Earlier this week, Rodrigues dropped an appeal against his removal from the position which came after a court ruling nullified an agreement which had enabled him to secure re-election until 2030. The court case concerned the alleged forgery of former CBF president Antonio Carlos Nunes de Lima's signature on the agreement.

Ousted Brazil FA president Rodrigues drops appeal ahead of election
May 19 (Reuters) - The ousted president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) Ednaldo Rodrigues officially withdrew his appeal on Monday to remain in office following his removal by a Rio de Janeiro court last week. In a statement submitted to Brazil's Federal Supreme Court by Rodrigues' legal team, the former president said his decision aims to "restore peace to Brazilian football and serenity to the official's family life." A new election had already been scheduled for next Sunday by the CBF's interim president, Fernando Sarney, one of the CBF's vice-presidents who requested Rodrigues' removal. Rodrigues confirmed through his lawyer that he will neither run for any position nor support any candidate in the upcoming vote. "In relation to the new elections called by the intervener, he declares that he is not running for any office or supporting any candidate," says the document signed by Rodrigues' lawyer Gamil Foppel. According to the document, Ednaldo "wishes success and good luck to those who will take over Brazilian football". The document also lists a number of Ednaldo's "achievements" at the head of the CBF, including the hiring of Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti, who is expected to announce his first Brazil squad next week for their next World Cup qualifiers. The CBF declined to comment. Only one candidate successfully registered for Sunday's election - Samir Xaud, president-elect of the Roraima Football Federation, a state with limited influence in Brazilian top-tier football. To register as a candidate, the interested party must have the support of at least eight state federations and five clubs. The move follows a court ruling that nullified an agreement which had enabled Rodrigues to secure re-election until 2030. The agreement was deemed invalid by the Rio de Janeiro court due to the alleged forgery of former CBF president Antonio Carlos Nunes' signature and concerns over his mental capacity.

Barcelona hand trial to 16-year-old Brazil wonderkid after creative midfielder impresses at Copinha tournament
Barcelona have taken a teenage Brazilian prodigy on trial for 10 days after catching the eye at a prominent South American tournament. Joao Vitor, a 16-year-old hailing from Roraima in north Brazil, was invited to La Masia this month and is currently training with the club's under 18s. Barca scouts had spotted the central midfielder during the famed Copinha tournament, where the performances of the Ibrachina product had prompted interest from across the world. At 15 years 10 months, Vitor was the youngest player to score in this season's competition for youth sides across Brazil. Vitor had spent four years at Palmeiras before switching to Ibrachina. Palmeiras, Flamengo, Santos and Vasco de Gama are among those interested in signing him after the Copinha. Barca have stolen a march, however, and want to take a closer look at how Vitor – in Catalonia with his representatives from Websoccer - stands up to their current crop. The Champions League semi finalists have offered similar to the likes of Mali winger Ibrahima Diarra and David Oduro, a Ghanian defender, with the pair securing contracts. 'I was invited to a training period and to get to know the structure of the club,' Vitor said. 'I am very happy for the opportunity. I want to thank God, everyone who helped me get here and Ibrachina for the opportunity given to me. I will give my best.'
