Evacuation alerts in effect for Candle Lake, Creighton due to fast-moving wildfires

Evacuation alerts have been issued for the resort village of Candle Lake and the community of Creighton – as wildfires continue to burn out of control in northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba. As of Tuesday morning, the Shoe fire had merged with the nearby Camp fire and had grown to more than 216,000 hectares – threatening Candle Lake. The alert was issued just before 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Instructions in the province's alert tells residents to use Highways 265 and 120 if evacuating and to contact the Village Office to register their evacuation. A separate evacuation notice was issued for the town of Creighton late Wednesday afternoon. The order follows a similar action taken by the city of Flin Flon – which lies directly over the Manitoba border. Residents in Creighton are encouraged to use Highway 106 to leave the community and are reminded to register their evacuation with the town office. Transportation out of town will also be provided at the community's Sportex at 8 a.m. Thursday. According to the province, wildfires in the area continue to be fast moving. As of Wednesday afternoon, 19 wildfires were burning in Saskatchewan, with nine of those considered not contained, according to the province. -With files from Rory MacLean
