Bring it on – Hannon counting down to Ascot with Rosallion
In fourth was Notable Speech, who beat Rosallion in the 2000 Guineas but finished behind him at Ascot, and the pair look like meeting once again. 'I'm not going to lie, it was a little bit disappointing not to win, but he ran a super race,' Hannon told Sky Sports Racing. 'The reason he got beat in the Guineas last year, it's because he needs that first run. That was evident last year and even more evident this year now he's a year older. 'We're looking forward to Royal Ascot. Sean (Levey) got off and said he'd win the Queen Anne. I spoke to Charlie Appleby afterwards and he said Will (Buick) said he'd win it, so here we go again! 'It will be a fantastic race that we all can't wait for and he'll go there full on. 'You can win with horses in two-year-old races who haven't had a run, but at that level it counts. Some in the Lockinge were having their second or third runs of the year and my fellow was having his first run. 'Naturally ours improve for their first run and horses like him especially so. I'm not saying he's a certainty, but I'm looking forward to it.'

Bring it on – Hannon counting down to Ascot with Rosallion
Richard Hannon believes Rosallion will be a different proposition come the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. Winner of the St James's Palace Stakes and Irish Guineas last season, he was having his first start for the best part of year when third in the Lockinge to Lead Artist. The intrigue of the jockeys merry-go-round
Nearly always a thriller, Newbury's Lockinge Stakes, instituted in 1958 and a Group 1 race since 1995, is an ever-welcome signpost to the Flat season. The Guineas Classics have started the three-year-old stories; the Lockinge shows us which older horses will be battling for supremacy over a mile. For four-year-olds and upwards, it has been won by great horses like Brigadier Gerard, and I will never forget Frankel scorching away from his field to win by five lengths in 2012. This year's running promised a special quality, perhaps the best for decades, with a jockeys merry-go-round adding to the intrigue. Notable Speech had won last year's 2000 Guineas and Sussex Stakes, Rosallion the Irish equivalent along with the St James's Palace Stakes at Ascot. Fallen Angel had won the Irish 1000 Guineas while Tam-fana was widely judged to have been one of the unluckiest losers of the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket in 2024. Dancing Gemini had been a close second in the 2024 French 2000 Guineas, and it was Roger Teal's Camelot colt who started favourite after two early-season victories. Dancing Gemini would have been a highly popular victory for the Lambourn trainer who had a nightmare season of second places in 2024. Rosallion probably represented the highest class, but had been 333 days off games following a respiratory infection. Dancing Gemini led into the final furlong but was collared at the end by Lead Artist, trained by John and Thady Gosden for Juddmonte and ridden by Oisin Murphy, who came home the winner by a neck after having been backed down from 18-1 to 17-2.

Hannon relishing Royal Ascot rematch with Lockinge third Rosallion
The Hannon family have an exceptional record in their local racecourse's Group One highlight, with the likes of Paco Boy (2010), Canford Cliffs (2011), Olympic Glory (2014) and Night Of Thunder (2015) on the roll of honour. Rosallion drifted out to 9-4 from his early morning position as favourite and having not run since winning the St James's Palace Stakes 12 months ago, a lack of match practice told in the end. He was beaten two-and-a-quarter lengths by John and Thady Gosden's Lead Artist, but Hannon is relishing locking horns with those ahead of him once again in the Queen Anne Stakes next month. Hannon said: 'He's an extremely good horse and will strip a lot fitter next time and will take a lot of beating at Ascot. I'm looking forward to Ascot. 'I think for all big owners and trainers, all roads lead to Ascot and especially with this horse it is almost impossible to get him to run his best race on his first race. 'He's a year older now but he did take a bit (of getting ready) last year and that may have just cost us a Guineas. But he's proved he's the horse he was last year and almost hit the front there and he will improve for it. 'It boils down to match fitness and I have no doubt he will run very well at Ascot. They are all very good horses and of course I'm disappointed not to win, but I'm sure in a couple of hours I will be happy he has actually run a really good race. 'He travelled into the race lovely and Sean (Levey, jockey on Rosallion) and William (Buick) on Notable Speech are probably both in the same boat in thinking that their horses will improve massively and they are both proven Group One winners.' Also making his comeback was the aforementioned Notable Speech, who denied Rosallion in the 2000 Guineas last season before seeing the tables turned at Royal Ascot. Just a short head separated the pair at Newbury, with Notable Speech's trainer Charlie Appleby joining Hannon in looking ahead to another high-profile clash at the Royal meeting. Notable Speech was not disgraced in the Lockinge (Andrew Matthews/PA) 'I'm delighted and William said he showed all his old enthusiasm,' said Appleby. 'He's travelled and you can see from Will's body language he's holding on to him and tracking the horse he felt was the right horse to go and attack. 'He just got tired in the last 200 yards but it will put him spot on for Ascot.' One of the early stars of the Flat season has undoubtedly been Roger Teal's Dancing Gemini, who is still searching for an elusive top-level triumph having rattled the crossbar once again in being beaten just a neck in second. Dancing Gemini (right) went down fighting (Steven Paston/PA) Lead Artist was 13 lengths behind Dancing Gemini when Teal's charge won the bet365 Mile at Sandown last month and the trainer said: 'The winner has beaten us before and he obviously needed that race badly at Sandown. I did think he was well overpriced and not to be taken lightly. 'The ground was rattling fast, Ryan (Moore) said it was as quick as he's ever been on and just felt the ground might have beaten us. 'We don't duck and dive, he's only gone down a neck and he's put the rest of the field a good distance behind him. 'He had an awkward draw on the flank there (in stall one) so Ryan had to take him back to get a bit of cover, he said he was a little further back than he wanted to be but what else do you do when you're stuck out there? 'He's gone down on his sword and he hasn't let us down. He'll be a Group One winner on his day.'

Lead Artist tops Dancing Gemini in Lockinge thriller
John and Thady Gosden's four-year-old was a 17-2 chance under Oisin Murphy, with Dancing Gemini and Rosallion the key players in the market. The latter came home a two-and-a-quarter-length third, but Dancing Gemini fought Lead Artist all the way to the line to miss out only in the final strides as the Juddmonte-owned horse came out triumphant by a neck. Lead Artist had finished last of eight behind Dancing Gemini on his seasonal bow in the bet365 Mile at Sandown last month, but John Gosden felt the outing had the desired effect on the Dubawi colt. He said: 'He's got a great deal of talent and it was a beautiful ride. It was dead ground at Sandown and he had been working at home fine but he just plain blew up, he came with a nice run but just blew up at the furlong pole and Kieran (Shoemark) looked after him. 'That race brought him on a lot and he got a peach of a ride from Oisin. 'He likes summer fast ground and he showed it here. He's a powerful horse with a lot of speed. 'This was a real test of a mile and Ryan (Moore) has come to us and in the end this horse is getting the stiff mile at the pace they went. If they had gone steady and sprinted, it would have been a different ball game. 'Being honest, I thought we would be in the first four and I would be thrilled because there were so many good horses in it and the betting told you that. The fact he was in a position where he was able to go first, then they had to get him and then he was able to go again because he still had plenty of talent in reserve.' Lead Artist is Coral's 4-1 favourite for next month's Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, with Dancing Gemini a point longer and Rosallion a 6-1 chance. Gosden added: 'We will all probably meet again in the Queen Anne. It's the next obvious step and we hope it doesn't get wet – we don't want a wet Ascot and if the ground is OK, we'll be going to the Queen Anne and a stiff mile at Ascot will suit him well.' For Murphy, it was a first Group One triumph in the Juddmonte silks and also gave him redemption for the defeat of Lightning Spear in this very race in 2018. He said: 'He has a great demeanour, relaxed well and showed a lot of guts against the second horse, Dancing Gemini, who came into the race in great form. It was a great tussle to the line and I'm delighted to come out on top. 'I was aware it might turn into a sprint and possibly if I had been beaten I would have thought I may have made more use of my horse, but fortunately it all worked out. 'The yard was very confident and they prepared him well and it is a while since I have won a Group One for Clarehaven and my first for Juddmonte. 'It means a lot and Ryan beat me in a photo finish a while back when I was on Lightning Spear, so it was nice to beat him because that is quite rare.'
