‘Let's hope Lenny Henry's leg doesn't get bitten off!' ITV's bizarre celebrity Jaws tribute
Jaws turns 50 this year – a momentous occasion for arguably the most influential movie ever made. After all, we are talking about a piece of entertainment that – for better or worse – we are still living through. This sort of anniversary doesn't come around very often and, now that we are witnessing the slow death of the theatrical experience, it deserves to be commemorated in the most lavish way possible. By this, I mean that ITV should gently lower Ross Noble into shark-infested waters. And I am not the only one who thinks this, since ITV has just announced the lineup of its new 'wildlife crossover format' SHARK! Celebrity Infested Waters, in which some famous people will swim with sharks for a bit. Or, to quote the press release, 'a group of ocean-phobic celebrities confront their greatest fear – sharks. Throughout their adrenaline-fuelled, challenge-heavy journey in the Bahamas – the shark capital of the world – these A-listers will push past their limits to come nose to nose with nature's 'villains'.' The lineup in full is Ade Adepitan, Helen George, Sir Lenny Henry, Ross Noble, Dougie Poynter, Lucy Punch and Rachel Riley. Now, if this sounds at all familiar to you, it might be because you're old enough to remember the show ITV made to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Jaws. That show was entitled Celebrity Shark Bait, and it saw Richard E Grant, Amy Nuttall and others being gently lowered into shark-infested waters. And it wasn't very good, to the point that at times it felt like a thorough scientific experiment to make the least interesting shark-based TV programme possible. The jeopardy was minimal. The celebrity reactions were muted. The shark footage wasn't particularly spectacular. When it was broadcast, the Manchester Evening News called it 'the biggest waste of time of them all'. So why do it again? Well, there are two competing arguments. The first is that nobody watches linear TV any more, so ITV hasn't really got anything to lose by remaking a 20-year-old flop. The second is that, if you parse the press release closely enough, you can just about tell that this is an attempt to improve upon what went before. Yes, the ITVness of it is the celebrity aspect – part of the show has clearly been designed to appeal to the very specific subsection of people who want to see Rachel Riley have a panic attack in a swimsuit – but there does seem to be more of a conservation focus this time too. The press release points out that, as well as almost getting eaten, the celebrities will 'come to appreciate sharks' valuable place on the food chain and in our ecosystem'. Better still, the show actively seems to want to commemorate Jaws by undoing some of the harm it has done to the reputation of sharks. That is, unless Henry gets his leg bitten off along the way, because that probably wouldn't help a lot. So is it silly? Yes. Does it signify that ITV is running out of ideas? Yes. Does it have the very worst title you have ever seen? Yes, and quite frankly the government should step in and legislate against television shows with names that you're expected to yelp at. But does SHARK! Celebrity Infested Waters have potential? Absolutely. In fact, so odd is the format of the show's name that a franchise seems likely. If SHARK! Celebrity Infested Waters is a success, then maybe we can expect other shows about animals that modern culture has taught us to fear, like BEAR! Celebrity Infested Forests, or SPIDER! Celebrity Infested Attics. Look me in the eye and tell me that you wouldn't want to see Peter Andre and Adam Woodyatt star in a series called FISH THAT SWIMS UP YOUR URINE STREAM AND GETS LODGED IN YOUR URETHRA! Celebrity Infested Rivers. I know I would.

Edinburgh bowler who began losing vision at 25 warns 'I did this to myself'
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info An Edinburgh man who began losing his sight at the age of 25 has said he 'did it to himself'. Ross Noble, now 32, was diagnosed with type one diabetes as a youngster. He admits that he 'wanted to be like the other kids', and pushed his condition to the back of his mind. Though doctors told him to take control of the situation throughout his teens and early '20s, Ross 'didn't look after his diabetes'. The keen bowler was in hospital with a chest infection in 2018, when he ruptured vessels behind both eyes during a coughing fit. Since then, his vision has continued to deterioriate and he has lost sight in his right eye. Ross, who has lived in Sighthill his whole life, didn't give up bowls - and has found a way to stay on the greens. After joining Visually Impaired Bowlers Scotland, he's now got the chance to fly to New Zealand for the International Blind Bowls Association World Championships in 2027. He's launched a fundraiser to help cover flights and travel for the dream trip. Ross admitted that he 'won't throw a tantrum' over his situation that he believes 'his own choices led him to'. Speaking with Edinburgh Live, Ross said: "The underlying factor is that I am type one diabetic. (Image: Supplied) "Growing up, I just wanted to be like every other kid. I didn't look after my diabetes, and unfortunately that is the main factor of it all. "Throughout my teens and my early twenties I was told 'you better sort yourself out, or you could end up in a wheelchair' and things like that. Like every young person, I thought I was invincible." In 2018, Ross ended up in hospital with a chest infection. In the middle of a coughing fit, his eyesight 'went very blurry'. He added: "It didn't register straight away. I thought maybe it was a side effect from the medication. "They sent me home and about two days later I contacted the GP, who told me it wasn't a side effect. I'd ruptured vessels behind both of my eyes when I was having a coughing fit. "It all started from there really. I spent about a year getting eye injection treatment, which worked for the most part." In September 2019, Ross woke up and couldn't see out of his right eye. Doctors eventually told him he had a 'huge haemorrhage' behind the eye, and they would need to operate. Sign up for Edinburgh Live newsletters for more headlines straight to your inbox While the procedure itself 'went well', Ross' body didn't flow enough blood back to the area. He was told that what little vision he had in the eye, would gradually deteriorate to nothing. He added: "So after that operation, all I could tell out my right eye was extremely bloody shapes. "After about a year I couldn't even tell light and dark in the right eye. I've had small haemorrhages behind the left eye as well, I think my vision is around 65% in that one - but that's just a guess. "I got diagnosed with kidney failure at the end of 2019 as well. A year and a half ago I had to get a hip replacement because I got diagnosed with a rare bone condition, called avascular necrosis. "It's a running joke in my family that as soon as one I get one procedure done, something else will pop up and not long after. (Image: Supplied) "I've definitely had times where I felt kind of sorry for myself. I kind of came to terms pretty early on that I've more or less done this to myself. "My own choices when I was younger is kind of what's led me to this point. I can't throw a tantrum about it. "I just have to do what I can to keep going." Ross has always found therapy in bowls, and has been playing since he was eight-years-old. When his vision began to go, he feared having to give it up. However, he's still on the green - and is hoping to head to New Zealand for the International Blind Bowls Association World Championships in 2027. Ross told us: "One thing that's always been a constant is bowls. "It didn't matter what was going on, kind of at school, at home, as soon as I went on the bowling green, I just forget about everything. Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages. "It feels so weird when I'm not playing. I've played for the Edinburgh Hamilton Trophy team, and I've also played for Edinburgh on the 25s team where we were Scottish Champions. "In 2022 I got a call from Visually Impaired Bowlers Scotland, and was asked to go along. I got to meet everyone and learn how they play." Ross discovered how blind and visually impaired people play bowls, using the assistance of a director. They act as their 'eyes' on the green, and use clock face descriptions and verbal guidance on the position of the jack (the target ball) and the other bowls so that the player knows where to aim. Over the past three years, Ross has won several competitions within the Visually Impaired Bowlers World. He's hoping to be heading to New Zealand for the championships, though will need to self fund for flights and hotels. You can help Ross get to New Zealand here.
