Returning Woakes helps put Bears on top against Worcs
Rothesay County Championship Division One, Visit Worcestershire New Road, Worcester (day two) Warwickshire 227: Hain 86, Latham 59; Taylor 4-37 & 53-1: Yates 17* Worcestershire 181: Libby 45; Rushworth 4-37, Woakes 3-34 Warwickshire (3 pts) lead Worcestershire (3 pts) by 99 runs with nine wickets remaining. Match scorecard Chris Rushworth and Chris Woakes bowled Warwickshire into the ascendancy over Worcestershire on the second day of the County Championship Division One derby at Visit Worcestershire New Road. Rushworth (4-37) and Woakes (3-34) exploited perfect seam-bowling conditions to bowl the home side out for 181. That gave Warwickshire a first innings lead of 46 - small but potentially decisive in a low-scoring game. The visitors closed the second day on 53-1 - 99 ahead overall. It was an encouraging day for Warwickshire and also for England as Woakes safely came through his return to first-team bowling after a knee injury. He looked fluent and in good rhythm as he bowled well from the Diglis End. Worcestershire resumed on the second morning on 53 without loss, strongly placed but in batting conditions which were even more tricky than on the first day. Cloud cover and dampness from overnight rain had been added to the mischievous pitch. Rushworth and Woakes could not have asked for more helpful conditions for their first competitive bowl of the season and both took full advantage as Worcestershire's ten wickets fell for 117 runs. Woakes began the collapse by pinning Jake Libby (45) lbw. He then extended Henry Nicholls' thin spell of form via a catch at third slip. Nicholls' departure was the first of four wickets to fall for eight runs in seven overs as Rushworth found his rhythm from the New Road End. Perfectly pitched outswingers induced three fatal edges in eight balls from Gareth Roderick (24), Rob Jones and Brett D'Oliveira. Under glowering skies, the outside edges continued to come. Wicketkeeper Alex Davies took the catches as Woakes snared Ethan Brookes and Matthew Waite became Rushworth's 673rd first class victim. Kashif Ali's 159 minutes of impressive defiance for 31 ended when he edged Ed Barnard high to second slip. Tom Taylor clubbed Webster to mid on and when the Aussie all-rounder, on his farewell appearance for Warwickshire before joining up with the Australia squad, bowled Ben Allison through a slog, Warwickshire's first innings lead was a solid 46. With the last session to bat, Warwickshire soon lost Alex Davies, beaten for pace and bowled by Jacob Duffy. In murky light, Rob Yates (17*) and Tom Latham (15*) ground out an unbroken partnership of 38 in 115 balls to cement their side's advantage while Rushworth's happy day got even better when his beloved Sunderland knocked in a stoppage time winner against Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final at Wembley. Surrey beat Yorkshire as record crowd watches at The Kia Oval
Surrey propelled themselves to within three points of the top spot in the Rothesay County Championship Division One after beating Yorkshire by an innings and 28 runs. The team needed just over an hour on the final day to secure their second win of the season, positioning themselves closely behind leaders Nottinghamshire. This triumph comes after a challenging match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, where Surrey conceded 665-5 and were forced to follow on in their fourth draw out of five. Record-breaking crowd watches Surrey defeat Yorkshire at the Kia Oval (Image: Getty Images for Surrey CCC) However, back on home turf at the Kia Oval, Surrey clinched their 18th win out of the last 24 matches. Surrey will aim to maintain this momentum against Essex this bank holiday weekend in the Festival of Red Ball Cricket, starting on Friday. Even without key seamer Dan Worrall, who is sidelined with a foot injury, Surrey's fast bowlers proved too formidable for Yorkshire after Rory Burns won the toss. Only opener Adam Lyth (55) and Jonny Bairstow (89) managed to resist for long, as Yorkshire were bowled out on the opening day for 255. Tom Lawes and Jordan Clark each claimed three wickets, with Lawes benefiting from a spectacular catch by Ben Foakes, who removed Jonny Tattersall. Yorkshire's seam attack also found some assistance from the well-grassed pitch. However, a classy 85 from debutant Kurtis Patterson and a solid 86 from Foakes, following his unbeaten 174 at Edgbaston, blunted their efforts. George Hill, the standout performer in Yorkshire's attack, claimed 5-66 from 28 overs, but Surrey's lower order put the hosts out of sight. Clark's 69 and Lawes' aggressive 37 guided Surrey to 512 all out. Facing a massive deficit, Yorkshire threatened to crumble at 83-3. James Wharton's 67 and another Bairstow salvo put on 84 for the fourth wicket. However, once they were split by former colleague Matt Fisher, it was Bairstow or bust. He had hit 10 fours and two sixes in his 77 when Ryan Patel's medium pace uprooted his off-stump, and the visitors were all out soon after for 228. Lawes took his tally for the match to six, and Clark seven, in a fine all-round display. The victory was not the only cause for celebration for Surrey. A 21st-century record crowd of 14,853 at the Kia Oval witnessed the match, beating the 13,706 set in last year's Red Ball Festival. They hope to improve upon that again this weekend. Chief executive Steve Elworthy said: "We've been blown away by the support we've had this year and can't wait to welcome thousands more this weekend." Tickets are available via Almost 38,000 spectators have witnessed the three Championship matches so far. Tickets have been reduced to £15 for adults and £1 for juniors. Among the activities being laid on are free coaching sessions for under-16s.

Robinson and Carson strike but Sussex let advantage slip
Sussex let the initiative slip after putting Somerset in at Taunton. Tom Lammonby hit 60 and 19-year-old Archie Vaughan a career-best 70 not out as a shuffled Somerset batting line-up posted 317 for six in warm sunshine after losing the toss in the Rothesay County Championship Division One match. James Rew contributed 46 and Tom Abell 42 on a wicket offering just enough assistance to seam and spin to keep the Sussex bowlers interested throughout the day. There were two wickets each for Ollie Robinson and Jack Carson as the visiting attack kept a tight rein on the scoring rate for most of the three sessions. With the pitch an inviting shade of green, it was no surprise when Sussex skipper John Simpson elected to field first, despite cloudless skies and a short boundary on the town side of the ground. CLICK HERE FOR SCORECARD There was a surprise for home supporters when Josh Davey and skipper Lewis Gregory, both more used to operating in the lower order, marched out as a new opening partnership, keen to help their side overcome some poor starts in Championship cricket. They had taken the score to 21 in the sixth over when Gregory edged a defensive push off Nathan McAndrew to Tom Clark at second slip and departed for 15. But the experiment could be deemed a success as Davey settled in to play with patience and sound technique. He and Lammonby put together a half-century stand off 109 balls and it wasn't until the 26th over that Sussex struck again, Davey, on 28, judged to have feathered a back-foot defensive shot off Robinson to wicketkeeper Simpson, who took a good low catch. Rew had progressed to 46 when attempting to drive a full ball from off-spinner Carson, who was finding some turn, and edging to Tom Haines at slip to make it 149 for three. A single off the same bowler took Lammonby to an impressive 120-ball fifty, including 5 fours, but he too perished unexpectedly with the score on 176, caught behind nicking a back-foot defensive shot off Carson. Abell was dropped at slip on 13 off the left-arm spin of James Coles, but Sussex continued to make inroads as Tom Banton fell for six, caught at slip off Fynn Hudson-Prentice. Abell fell in the third over with the second new ball, fending a ball from Robinson to Clark at second slip, just when he was starting to flow.
