Horse dies on second day of Royal Ascot festival after Queen Mary Stakes fall
A horse has died on the second day of action at the 2025 Royal Ascot festival, it has been confirmed. Harry's Girl, ridden by Sean Levey, suffered the fatal injury during the Queen Mary Stakes – the opening contest of Wednesday's packed bill, featuring six other races. Tragically, it was only Harry's Girl's third race, with Richard Hannon-trained dame the having won on debut at Newmarket in April before an appearance at York in May. But just seconds into the the Queen Mary Stakes, a five furlong event, Harry's Girl broke down, leaving spectators at Berkshire's iconic racecourse and aghast fearing the worst. 'Unfortunately, Harry's Girl suffered a fatal injury during The Queen Mary Stakes,' the official Ascot Racecourse account posted on X this afternoon. Royal Ascot 2025 Day 1 runners and riders: Full list of confirmed horses
Excitement and anticipation is building amongst racegoers ahead of the 2025 Royal Ascot festival, which gets underway today. Around 250,000 punters are expected to flock to Berkshire's historic racecourse across five days of drama, with 35 races taking place, including eight Group One events. The Queens Anne Stakes kicks off the action on what promises to be an absorbing opening day, also featuring the King Charles III Stakes and the St James's Palace Stakes. On each and every day, spectators will be treated to a total of seven races, beginning at 14:30 BST and running through to the final contest taking place at 18:10 BST. With over £10million worth of prize money on offer, the three-century-old festival remains among the most lucrative meetings of the horseracing season. More Trending The Prince Of Wales's Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes boast a prize pot of £1m per race, with no single contest run for less than £110,000.
