WeBuild acquries WA women and babies hospital contract

The Government of Western Australia (WA) has selected WeBuild as the managing contractor for the A$1.8bn ($1.1bn) New Women and Babies Hospital Project. This hospital will replace the King Edward Memorial Hospital, providing enhanced services for women, newborns, and families across the state. The facility will offer comprehensive care, with inpatient services for gynaecology and maternity, a neonatology unit, operating theatres, a family birthing centre, and outpatient clinics. Its location within the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct is said to improve access for regional patients, facilitated by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The construction phase of the project is set to generate over 1,400 jobs. The WA Government is also working on doubling maternity services at Osborne Park Hospital and expanding its gynaecology and neonatology departments. The body will also focus on the commissioning and final fit-out of the new hospital, along with the integration of ICT systems and medical equipment. Construction is anticipated to commence later this year, starting with a new multi-deck car park. Georgiou Group secured the contract for this initial phase in January 2025, which will add approximately 2,500 car bays to the precinct. Meanwhile, temporary off-site parking is being arranged to accommodate hospital precinct workers during this phase. WA Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey said: "Today's signing signifies a major step forward which will deliver a brand-new public hospital at the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct and state-of-the-art health infrastructure. "The New Women and Babies Hospital Project is continuing to progress to schedule, and crucially, we now have a top-tier managing contractor with a breadth of global experience officially on board." Furthermore, the Cook Government will begin consultations with local authorities and key stakeholders next month to improve the transport network around the precinct. The upcoming state budget will allocate A$22m for road upgrades and A$5m to plan future enhancements for Murdoch Train Station. The hospital's construction is set for completion by 2029. State Government yet to confirm if funding for Geraldton RFDS base will be included in next month's Budget

The State Government is remaining coy about funding for a Geraldton base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service in its upcoming Budget. One of Labor's commitments ahead of the State election was to provide $7.5 million for a local RFDS base, which at the time was estimated to be about half the required amount to deliver the facility. In Parliament on Tuesday, Geraldton MLA Kirrilee Warr put the question to Health Minister Meredith Hammat, asking what the status of the project was, whether the minister was aware of the cost, and why the Government was 'short-changing this critically important regional health facility'. In response, Ms Hammat acknowledged it was an important election commitment, but said the details would be revealed in next month's State Budget. 'All of our election commitments are subject to the budget process,' she said. 'The Budget will be handed down in this place in June and we will have more to say about it then.' When asked if the full amount would be delivered as part of the Budget, Ms Hammat said the State Government was proud of the commitment to deliver, but needed to respect the budget process. Ms Warr urged the State Government to provide a clear update on the project. 'While the health minister hides behind the State Budget process, other ministers have already started promoting election commitments, such as the country week assistance program and the new Burswood Park entertainment precinct, well in advance of the Budget,' Ms Warr said. 'Ever since the election campaign ended, it appears WA Labor no longer views the RFDS base in Geraldton as a priority, despite the urgent need for this project.' Ms Hammat has been contacted for further comment.

Queen of Hearts rolls into Kununurra on epic 20,000km heart health mission

She is almost 90 days into a 200-day journey, running and riding her way around Australia—and she's doing it all for hearts. Dawn Beaumont, known as the 'Queen of Hearts,' will arrive in Kununurra this Saturday as part of her 20,000km duathlon to raise $2 million for heart health and emergency medical services. The 40-year-old South Australian is on a mission to raise the money for the Heart Foundation and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, while spreading a personal message about heart health. Her journey began in Adelaide on February 25 and since then, she has been running 22km and cycling 80km every day, supported by her husband Kurt and their dog Archie, who travel alongside her in a support vehicle. Having ran and cycled across the Kimberley, Kununurra marks her final stop in Western Australia before she crosses into the Northern Territory. 'For me, this run-ride isn't about the distance, it's about the cause,' she said. Her passion for heart health advocacy began in 2013 when she saved her mother Janet's life during a heart attack at Crown Theatre Perth. 'In September 2013, my mother Janet went into cardiac arrest after having a heart attack. We were at the Crown Theatre in Perth about to watch a show, and she wasn't feeling well. After getting my mother out of the theatre into the foyer she collapsed and I performed CPR to revive her. Luckily, she survived,' she said. Her mother was 53 years old and had a major blockage in an artery which required surgery for a stent. 'After that, Mum had monthly appointments with her cardiologists and underwent a gastric sleeve procedure 12 months post-heart attack to reduce her weight. She lost 60kg and quit smoking.' Dawn's duathlon is believed to be the first of its kind in Australia. Over the course of her journey, she will visit every State and Territory, stop in 184 towns and wear out 16 pairs of running shoes. She consumes about 8000 calories daily to sustain her effort — four times the average recommended intake. Heart Foundation chief executive David Lloyd said he was inspired by Ms Beaumont's bold vision. 'Everything about Dawn's commitment to this remarkable fundraiser inspires me — it's such a huge and impressive thing to commit to doing. This kind of thing is so important for us, because at the Heart Foundation we rely on donations from the community to fund everything we do,' he said.
