Maharashtra govt to expedite compensation for farmers hit by unseasonal rains

1 2 Nagpur/Amravati: Maharashtra revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has directed district authorities to expedite compensation for farmers affected by untimely rains and storms in April and May. After reviewing the situation in the Amravati district, Bawankule instructed officials to quickly process damage assessment reports and submit compensation proposals to ensure that compensation reaches the affected farmers without delay. "Immediate efforts will be made to secure compensation for the affected farmers," said Bawankule, who is also the guardian minister of Amravati. According to preliminary assessments, 1,174 villages in the district suffered significant damage in April, with 794 hectares of crops, including banana, orange, papaya, onion, and wheat, affected. The estimated losses stand at Rs2.83 crore. In May, another 325 villages reported damage across 13,639 hectares of agricultural land growing green gram, sesame, banana, orange, papaya, onion, sorghum, and lemon. Final damage assessments are currently underway. In addition to crop losses, storms and lightning strikes in May claimed three lives and caused extensive damage to homes and livestock. In April, 18 homes were partially damaged and one was completely destroyed. In May, 741 homes suffered partial collapse, 14 houses were completely destroyed, and 12 animal sheds or huts were damaged. The storms also led to the death of 29 small livestock and 12 larger animals. Bawankule said that ex gratia assistance for the families of the deceased has been initiated, along with livestock assistance grants for affected animal owners. "The administration has been instructed to speed up the panchnamas and ensure that relief reaches both farmers and affected citizens as soon as possible," he added.
