agpur: Urban beautification and environment conservation will go hand-in-hand as the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will soon set up 15 vertical gardens across the city.
These gardens will be installed on the protective walls of bridges over the Nag and Pohra rivers and other major drains with an aim to reduce pollution and stop the widespread dumping of garbage into these water bodies.
According to civic officials, many citizens dump garbage into the drains from the parapet walls along main roads. To discourage this practice and improve the appearance of the city, municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari directed the creation of vertical gardens on these walls.
The project is expected to cost Rs5.10 crore and will feature a variety of decorative plant species, including Riho, Jade, Pandanus, Purple Heart and Wedelia. Wire mesh will be installed on the front side of the gardens for safety and protection.
NMC has already given administrative approval, and tenders will be invited shortly. A detailed survey identified 15 specific locations across the city for installation of the gardens.

Officials said the vertical gardens will not only enhance the visual appeal of the city's busy roads but also serve an important environmental purpose by discouraging waste dumping and helping improve the condition of the city's water bodies. Work on the project is expected to begin soon after the tender process is completed.
