Beed: Retired teacher falls prey to digital arrest con, loses 83L

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A retired teacher from Ambajogai in Beed district has been defrauded of over Rs83 lakh in another instance of the "digital arrest" scam. The victim reported being tricked into believing she was under scrutiny for alleged involvement in money laundering and terror funding. Superintendent of police Navneet Kanwat has acknowledged the incident and ordered an urgent investigation to swiftly resolve the case. An officer from the Beed cybercrime branch confirmed that the retired schoolteacher was coerced into parting with the money after being falsely accused during a simulated "digital arrest" conducted via a WhatsApp video call. Cybercrime officials said the 62-year-old woman received a call from an unidentified person posing as a police officer from Mumbai. To win her trust, the caller even cited the name of an additional director general of police, currently serving in the state police, and claimed that the senior police officer "specially requested" assistance in her case. The teacher said the suspect caller claimed a SIM card registered on her Aadhaar number was used for illegal activities and that she was under investigation for funding terrorist organisations and laundering money. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pés inchados: Experimente isso para ajudar a drenar o fluído do edema A arte do herbalismo Undo The fraudster, who identified himself as Sanjay Pise, made a WhatsApp video call showing fake police credentials. Railways posts Rs83b revenue

Listen to article Pakistan Railways has announced earning a record-breaking Rs83 billion in revenue during the first eleven months of the current financial year FY25, showing a growth of 7.8% over the corresponding period. According to the Railways spokesperson, this is the highest revenue collected by the organisation in any similar eleven-month period in its history. Federal Railways Minister Muhammad Hanif Abbasi hailed the achievement as historic, stating that "through hard work and dedication, we will put Railways back on its feet." The revenue breakdown shows passenger trains contributed Rs42 billion, while freight services generated Rs29 billion. Other income sources, including property leases and commercial activities, added Rs12 billion. Regional performance varied significantly, with Karachi Division emerging as the top performer — earning Rs13 billion from passengers and a substantial Rs25 billion from freight. Lahore Division reported Rs10 billion from passengers but less than Rs1 billion from freight. Both Rawalpindi and Multan Divisions earned Rs4 billion each from passengers, totalling Rs8 billion combined. This performance represents a notable improvement over the same period last year, when revenue stood at Rs77 billion. The current figures suggest Pakistan Railways might surpass its full-year target of Rs88 billion with one month remaining. This financial milestone comes against a backdrop of persistent challenges. For years, Pakistan Railways has struggled with aging infrastructure, frequent service disruptions, and safety concerns that have eroded public confidence. Many mainline tracks and bridges date back to the British colonial era, causing speed restrictions and delays. The organisation still operates at a significant operational loss when accounting for full infrastructure maintenance costs, despite this revenue increase. While the Rs83 billion revenue demonstrates progress in financial management and operational efficiency, industry analysts said this represents recovery rather than transformation. Sustained investment in infrastructure modernisation, consistent service quality, and resolution of long-standing debt issues are still needed before Pakistan Railways can be considered fully revitalised. "The revenue achievement offers hope, but the organisation's journey to becoming a truly modern, reliable, and profitable national transport service has just begun," they added.

PAU sports facility to soon get new hockey turf

Ludhiana: After over 13 years, the synthetic turf at Olympian Prithipal Singh Hockey Stadium in Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is being replaced. The old turf has been removed, and the bitumen below is being removed before it is relaid. Constructed in 1989, the stadium was named in the honour of Olympian Prithipal Singh, who had captained India to a bronze medal at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. It first received a synthetic astroturf surface in 1999, imported from the Netherlands. The last turf replacement took place in 2011, and the old surface was later repurposed for use in Sangrur. The facility, with a spectator capacity of around 10,000, is one of Punjab's key hockey training and competition grounds. It's currently being managed jointly by PAU and the Punjab sports department. Currently, 67 players across different age groups under-12, under-14, under-17, and under-19 from the sports department train at the stadium. During evening sessions, the number of players, including those from PAU and other outside academies, rises to approximately 150, according to coach Sukhbir Singh Dhaliwal. Speaking about the need for turf replacement, he said, "Over time, it had become uneven with certain areas depressed and others raised that compromised both player safety and performance," he said. While the renovation work is underway, training has temporarily been shifted to Malwa Khalsa School. The stadium has a history of hosting hockey tournaments, including All India Inter-University Championships in 2000 and 2006 in addition to other national-level tournaments and camps. In 2021, the stadium underwent additional upgrades worth Rs83 lakh under the Smart City Mission. These included renovation of changing rooms and washrooms, installation of sprinklers, new light poles, and a chain-linked fence. Dhaliwal said that if the work continues on schedule, players are expected to return to the facility by June.
