Concrete slab damages railing of Kosi bridge
Patna: A major mishap was narrowly averted in Bhagalpur district on Friday night when a large concrete slab fell from a transport vehicle onto the Bihpur-Virpur bridge being constructed across the Kosi river, damaging part of the existing railing.
The Rs996-crore project, initially targeted for completion by June 2024, has already seen delays. The revised deadline is now set for 2026.
The incident occurred late on Friday near Trimuhan Ghat while a vehicle was transporting concrete segments. According to reports, the pressure pump pipe of the loader burst unexpectedly, causing the load to shift.
Officials said the 90-wheel loader was ferrying a massive slab intended for installation when it slipped from the vehicle and struck the bridge's railing, damaging around seven feet of it before falling into the river below.
On Saturday morning, rumours that the entire bridge had collapsed sparked panic, prompting locals to rush to the site. However, officials clarified that only a minor section was affected.
"The boundary of the bridge has been damaged. We have asked the company to repair it. A small section of the slab and railing was impacted. The incident occurred when the vehicle struck the railing while transporting the slab," said Rituraj Pratap Singh, SDO of Naugachia.

The bridge, part of the National Highway 106 project under PM Narendra Modi's infrastructure package, was approved in 2015. The 6.94-km structure, with an additional 22km of approach roads, will be Bihar's longest bridge and a crucial lifeline for the flood-prone Kosi region. The foundation stone was laid by the PM via videoconferencing in 2020, and construction began in June 2021.
