arrested a person following an exchange of fire near Jamdanipur-Didarganj border on Wednesday night. The police also arrested a woman member of the gang while four others managed to escape.
According to Shahganj Circle Officer Ajit Singh Chauhan, accused Shadab was intercepted around 10pm during a routine vehicle check. On spotting the police, Shadab, who was on a motorcycle, attempted to flee. A high-speed chase ensued, during which his motorcycle lost control due to a shifting sack, causing him to fall. He then tried to escape on foot and opened fire at the police team. When the cops retaliated in self-defence, Shadab suffered injury in the leg and was arrested.
Upon his arrest, police recovered a firearm, cartridges, and a sack containing 120 kgs of beef. Shadab was rushed to a hospital for treatment. During interrogation, he confessed to being part of a gang that captured stray cows and calves, slaughtered them at home, and sold the meat in nearby areas. He revealed that he was enroute to Azamgarh to deliver the beef to customers when he encountered the police.
Based on the information provided by Shadab, police conducted a raid at a house in Jamdanipur.

There, gang members Naushad, his wife Rubana, Pappu, Dilshad, and Irshad were engaged in butchering and packing beef. On seeing the police, all attempted to flee. While Rubana was nabbed, others managed to escape.
Police seized evidence from the scene, including bovine remains, slaughtering tools, a knife, cleaver, weighing scale, a motorcycle, and a mobile phone. The arrested persons are being booked under relevant sections of the Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act and other relevant laws. Police have also launched a manhunt to nab the absconding accused and are investigating the extent of the illegal beef trade in the region.
