Varanasi: In a crackdown on illegal cow slaughter , Shahganj police in Jaunpur district arrested a person following an exchange of fire near Jamdanipur-Didarganj border on Wednesday night. The police also arrested a woman member of the gang while four others managed to escape. According to Shahganj Circle Officer Ajit Singh Chauhan, accused Shadab was intercepted around 10pm during a routine vehicle check. He then tried to escape on foot and opened fire at the police team. When the cops retaliated in self-defence, Shadab suffered injury in the leg and was arrested. Upon his arrest, police recovered a firearm, cartridges, and a sack containing 120 kgs of beef. Shadab was rushed to a hospital for treatment. During interrogation, he confessed to being part of a gang that captured stray cows and calves, slaughtered them at home, and sold the meat in nearby areas. He revealed that he was enroute to Azamgarh to deliver the beef to customers when he encountered the police.
