6 most daring looks we witnessed at Cannes Film Festival 2025: From Urvashi Rautela to Ruchi Gujjar
The 11 days of the Cannes Film Festival are finally over, and in these amazing days, all we did was crush over our celebrities. Both Indian and international stars graced the red carpet, each making a fashion statement, taking it one step further. However, along with the mesmerizing looks, we also witnessed some of the most out-of-the-box ensembles that created the buzz among the audience. And in this article, we've got 7 of the weirdest and most daring Cannes looks, so let's dive into it! 1. Urvashi Rautela Going overboard with her look, Urvashi Rautela showed up at the red carpet in a vibrant multi-colored outfit having shades of blue, green, white, black, and more. It had a strapless design with the structured neckline—the peplum design cinched her waist and formed a body-hugging silhouette. The blue, black and white sheer fabric tulle on either side added a couture touch. The quirkiest highlight of her look was that she carried a parrot-shaped bag in her arms that cost Rs 4,67,895. And for beauty, she chose a tacky, bold makeup. 2. Ruchi Gujjar The other celebrity to don one of the unexpected looks for the red carpet was Ruchi Gujjar, who literally added PM Narendra Modi's face dangler in the embellished necklace. For the outfit, she went for the whole Rajasthani look with the cream-colored lehenga, having a plunging neckline blouse, mirror work ghaghra, and dupatta on her head. Also for the additional traditional vibe, she wore choodabaju that complemented her look. 3. Isabella Menin Isabella Menin totally left everyone stunned with a silver outfit inspired by the spiral seashell from Lena Erziak. It was a piece of art with the oversized spiral detailing on one side of the bodycon couture dress, cascading into a long fabric trailing behind, screaming drama and attention. With the minimal accessories and hair tied in a bun, letting all our focus on her outfit with the oversized detailing almost reaching her face. 4. Farhana Bodi Farhana Bodi brought the most daring and difficult-to-carry look to Cannes. She was in a fully embellished pink gown with a body-hugging silhouette, featuring a massive outer layer at the back spreading out like a flower. Another highlight was the sharp petal rising up from the dress. She completed her look with dangler earrings and a bun hairstyle. 5. Elisa de Panicis Agnelli Elisa de Panicis Agnelli makes a bold and quirky fashion statement in a sultry cut-out outfit. It had a strapless design with a dramatic floor-length train and a thin strap around the neck. But what stood out the most was that it was covered in bold black prints with different words written on it. Her ensemble also featured a massive watch at the front. With no accessories, she let the makeup be subtle and left her hair open. 6. Mitchell Akat Maruko Raan Mitchell Akat Maruko Raan rocking the animal print outfit at the global stage was definitely something we didn't see coming. It had a top with a turtleneck, full sleeves, and a bodycon fit. The edge of the top was asymmetrical, adding a bold edge. She paired it with the matching printed bottom. In this outfit, the eye-catching detail was the 3D tiger, popping out from one side. It indeed blew our minds off. This year's Cannes Film Festival was full of surprises, and these 6 celebrities made their appearance memorable with quirky and never-seen-before looks!

From Met Gala to Cannes, why Indians struggle to make an impression on the red carpet
At Cannes 2025, actor Ruchi Gujjar walked the red carpet in a gold lehenga — opulent, regal, photogenic. But it was the necklace she wore, featuring a custom pendant with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's face on it, that turned heads and triggered debate. A tribute to 'India's strength and global ascent,' she explained. In a single moment, fashion became politics. But the bigger question remains — was it representation, or merely performance? Red carpets aren't just about gowns and glamour — they are platforms of soft power, self-expression, and cultural diplomacy. From the Met Gala to the Venice Film Festival, global celebrities use fashion to tell stories, provoke conversations, and sometimes challenge systems. Think Billie Eilish in repurposed Oscar de la Renta, or Kristen Stewart in bare feet, dismantling red carpet norms one stride at a time. Fashion here is a language, a way to assert identity, values, and narratives on a global stage. But what about Indian celebrities? Time and again, India's most visible faces have shown up in borrowed silhouettes, indistinct styling, and symbolism that confuses rather than communicates. Political motifs, excessive ornamentation, or vague nods to tradition take precedence over intention, personal voice, or storytelling. The result? A surface-level spectacle that dazzles in pixels but fades in meaning. This year at Cannes, two Indian women told starkly different stories. Ruchi Gujjar offered spectacle, a dazzling ensemble paired with a political message. Meanwhile, content creator Nancy Tyagi stitched her own gown using local fabrics, simple tools, and sheer dedication. Her presence was unfiltered and quietly powerful. Tyagi represented what Indian fashion could be: Sustainable, self-made, culturally rooted, and globally relevant. Gujjar, on the other hand, epitomised a growing trend of red carpet tokenism, where identity is commodified, symbols deployed without context, and intention lost in translation. Indian celebrities often arrive at global events in borrowed gowns and generic styling. Even when traditional Indian elements appear, they tend to be aestheticised rather than contextualised. The issue isn't merely taste or politics — it's cultural literacy. Our appearances on these global platforms often lack depth because we treat them as photo opportunities rather than moments of cultural authorship. It's not that India lacks a rich fashion vocabulary — we certainly do — but we seem hesitant to speak in our own voice. Nancy Tyagi's rise is more than a feel-good story; it's a blueprint for how Indian fashion representation can be reimagined. By combining storytelling, craftsmanship, and accessibility, she proved that one does not need a luxury label to command respect and attention. Her strength lay in sincerity. This is the model India should build on: A fashion identity rooted in self-reliance, inclusive of our craftspeople, and intentional in its messaging. Imagine Indian celebrities collaborating with local artisans, curating red carpet moments that express who we truly are, rather than just how expensive we can appear. When we reduce fashion to mere glitter and iconography — whether it's a designer logo or the face of a political figure — we lose the opportunity to say something meaningful and enduring. Red carpets are not simply stages for performance; they are platforms to articulate values, voices, and visions. India is undoubtedly a fashion powerhouse. But power without purpose risks becoming noise. The next time we step onto the world stage, may we do so not just dressed for the camera, but dressed with conscience, clarity, and meaning. ‘And they say Bella Hadid nailed it': Janhvi Kapoor wears custom Tarun Tahiliani and ‘kala nazar dhaga' to Cannes; Aishwarya Rai Bachchan arrives with Aaradhya
From Janhvi Kapoor floating down the red carpet like she was in a dream sequence, to Ruchi Gujjar casually wearing Prime Minister Modi on her necklace, Indians didn't just show up at Cannes yesterday—we made sure nobody could look away. There were some jaw-dropping looks, and some hilarious blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments (hello, mystery black band on Janhvi's wrist). Whether you were there for the couture or just came for the memes, Cannes moments truly delivered last night. Let's break down the good, the glam, and the gloriously unhinged moments from the Indians on the red carpet. A post shared by Rhea Kapoor (@rheakapoor) For the official premiere of her film Homebound today, Janhvi wore custom Anamika Khanna couture along with a mix of archival traditional Indian jewels, with custom jade and jadao creations. A voluminous sea-green skirt accentuated the gold bodice of Janhvi's outfit. A post shared by Janhvi Kapoor (@janhvikapoor) The day before, the actor made her grand debut in a soft pink outfit by Tarun Tahiliani and styled by Rhea Kapoor. The outfit looked like a cross between a lehenga and a gown. The fabric was real Banarasi tissue, and it had a crinkled, hand-crushed texture that made it look almost like wearable silk origami. The corset was structured, the skirt had serious volume, and a flowing drape swept across her head like a modern ghoonghat. Pearls, rosy cheeks, a floral garland, and a classic winged liner pulled the whole look together. But of course, this is the Internet—nobody is safe. One eagle-eyed fan zoomed in on her wrist and cracked, 'Bro forgot to take off hair band from hand.' It might've been a kala nazar thread, but who's checking? Janhvi wasn't alone—her Homebound crew was right beside her. Ishaan Khatter ditched the usual black suit for a wine-coloured velvet number by Gaurav Gupta. The embroidery was minimal, the pants were roomy, and the vibe was very cool cousin at a wedding. Director Neeraj Ghaywan was seen helping Janhvi with her outfit on the carpet—brownie points for that. Meanwhile, Karan Johar rolled in with a ruffled white coat from Manish Malhotra and giant black trousers. Basically, drama on top and party at the bottom. Aditi Rao Hydari wore Rahul Mishra, channelling her signature calm, floaty angel energy. And get this: it took 2,600 hours to make. We repeat—2,600 human hours. That's longer than some relationships last. According to the designer, the gown shifted from black to ivory and was inspired by cosmic energy. It had embroidery, resham threads, sequins, bugle beads—everything. Now for the wild card: Ruchi Gujjar. You might not have heard of her before, but she ensured you'd never forget her after Cannes. A post shared by Ruchi Gujjar (@ruchigujjarofficial) Wearing a bold gold lehenga, Ruchi paired it with a necklace featuring tiny lotuses hanging from the neck, each stamped with a photo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. When asked why, she told News18: 'It's not just jewellery. It's a tribute to his leadership and India's rise.' As expected, the Internet could not keep calm. Some top comments included: 'Missed call from Rajmata Meloni 💀' and 'I've never laughed as much as I did looking at dis.' Earlier in the day, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also landed in France to attend the film festival, with daughter Aaradhya Bachchan. The actor was sporting a laidback look, dressed in a blue overcoat, simple white tee and black oversized pants. We can't wait to see her look at Cannes! She's given some of her best (also, not-so-best) appearances on the carpet.

Ruchi Gujjar's tribute to PM Modi at Cannes 2025 faces backlash, ‘No true Rajput would ever…'
Ruchi Gujjar, an emerging model and actor, wore traditional Kundan jewellery draped in gold as she walked the Cannes 2025 red carpet in a full wedding look. However, Minister Narendra Modi received a particular shoutout in her avatar. What caught everyone's attention was Ruchi Gujjar's elaborate necklace along with a traditional deep neckline. The lockets had PM Modi's image, which became the highlight of her bold fashion statement. Wearing a gold lehenga designed by Roopa Sharmaa, her outfit included gotta patti and mirror embroidery. She also wore a custom necklace with pictures of PM Modi surrounded by red enamel lotuses, pearls and Kundan. The remainder of the attire featured zardozi embroidery, a lehenga that would be appropriate for a Rajasthani wedding. Her dress had an all-gold, heavily decorated, mirror-worked colour scheme. The 78th annual Cannes Film Festival started on May 13 and would conclude on May 24. On Day 8 of the prestigious film festival, the former Miss Haryana made the statement. After winning the title of Miss Haryana 2023, Gujjar swiftly turned to acting and modelling. She is now charting her own path in the entertainment industry. A graduate of Maharani College in Jaipur, she abandoned the Pink City for the bright spotlights and movie sets of Mumbai. She has a growing fan following after being well-known in the music video industry and appearing in songs like "Heli Mein Chor" and "Jab Tu Meri Na Rahi". Social media users gave negative reactions to Ruchi Gujjar's Cannes 2025 look. Some of them found it inappropriate to pay a tribute to PM Modi while wearing a revealing dress. One user wrote, 'The placements of Modi badges is dangerous.' 'Feeling sad for Modi-ji. He will be devastated after watching this,' wrote another. 'You went to represent the nation or to make all of us embarrassed?' wrote one user. 'I'm from Rajasthan and this is OFFENSIVE at best. Good job in maligning the cultural fabric of my state for a red-carpet gimmick. And, the monstrous neckpiece with the PM's face on it? Grotesque,' commented another. 'Who the hell is she, and why she's invited at Cannes with such sad couture to represent India?' wrote another. 'Which state's heritage is this? She has written Rajasthan in the caption. Have you ever seen any Rajput woman wearing something like this? In their traditional attire, not even a corner of their body is visible, and here she is displaying her body. No true Rajput would ever call this cheap display their culture,' commented another user.
