Hubballi: A man was allegedly swept off in an overflowing drain while crossing the stream due to heavy rainfall as he was returning to his house in Old Hubballi. Police launched a search operation on Thursday.
A 55-year-old man named Hussain Sahab Kalas was riding his bike home during rain on Wednesday night, when he was swept away by rainwater and into a drain. A search operation was carried out. HDMC commissioner Rudresh Gali told TOI that the body of Hussain Sahab Kalas was found in Mishrikoti village.
Due to the heavy rain in the city, normal life was disrupted. Heavy rainfall resulted in waterlogging and flooding in various places, particularly in low-lying areas.
Waterlogging in most parts of the city, including Lamington Road, Koppikar Road, Dajiban Peth, Kamaripeth, Old Hubballi, Vidyanagar, and Unkal areas, caused traffic congestion for some time. There was a power outage in some areas on Wednesday night.
"Around 300 houses were waterlogged, and two bridges were damaged in the city because of the rainfall. Along with officials, I visited and observed the rain-damaged places," Gali said.
The rainwater blocked complexes, homes, and major market areas, causing hardship to traders. The major Rajakaluve in the city is overflowing. Unkal lake is also overflowing, and drain water overflowed onto some major roads, causing traffic disruptions.
The residents of RN Shetty Road staged a protest against HDMC corporators regarding the last rainfall that disrupted the lives of the residents there. Waterlogging had created a lot of chaos.
Residents blocked RN Shetty Road and protested. Later, the officials visited the spot and cleared the traffic.
Despite heavy rain, Dharwad district deputy superintendent of police Vinod Muktedar and his team were successful in rescuing three people and more than a hundred sheep stuck in the Tupparihalla stream. Hanamanthappa Kallappa Bevur, Hazaresaba Noolvi, and Rayappa Kabber were stuck in a stream at Byahatti Kusugal Road. It was known that there were hundreds of sheep with them. When information about this was received, Muktedar, the tahsildar, and many others who arrived at the spot overnight succeeded in rescuing them.
