Valentino offers unique sound experience at Madison Avenue store in New York

Music has always interested fashion labels and designers, who are often inspired by it and enjoy collaborating with musicians. But this time Valentino is proposing an unexpected music-related experience. Under the aegis of creative director Alessandro Michele, the Roman luxury label has launched the 'L'Atelier Sonore' (sound atelier) project, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a wholly sound-proofed space inside its New York flagship, opened in November 2023 at 654 Madison Avenue, where they can listen to music from vintage vinyl records, or simply enjoy silence. The project, developed in partnership with Italian cultural collective Terraforma, founded by Ruggero Pietromarchi, is addressed to the Valentino clientèle and to members of the public, all of them invited to a unique space within the store to listen to playlists compiled by various artists. L'Atelier Sonore is a space 'for deep listening and quiet contemplation' on the store's mezzanine, the ideal venue for this kind of initiative, a space that has been used for a number of cultural projects ever since the store opened. The floor of L'Atelier Sonore is carpeted, and the walls are entirely curtained. The interiors have been styled with the help of architect Francesco Lupia, and feature three furniture elements in wood with rectangular motifs: a customised sound system, a multi-functional listening console equipped with, among other things, a turntable, and modular chairs with velvet cushions. Reservations are needed to access L'Atelier Sonore, which has room for up to 30 people. It will be inaugurated in the early afternoon of May 15 with a special 10-hour session during which musicians and composers Laraaji, Lea Bertucci, Laurel Halo, Lizzi Bougatsos, Chuquimamani-Condori, Kevin Beasley, Veronica Vasicka, and Physical Therapy will stage individual 45-minute sessions, playing a selection of tracks from vinyl records from their personal archives. The Terraforma collective has compiled a series of playlists with sound designer Giorgio Di Salvo, creating 'sound landscapes' that visitors will be able to enjoy at the store between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. local time until the end of August. Terraforma will also stage listening sessions featuring 'friends of [Valentino], who will be sharing their personal music selections from their own collections.' Through this sound experience blending design, architecture and music, Valentino is reaffirming its bond with culture and its penchant for stimulating collaborations, while also boosting store footfall and hoping to attract new customers.
