Two nabbed, untaxed booze worth RM100,000 seized in Penang raid
GEORGE TOWN: Marine police arrested two men, one of them a foreign national, for possessing untaxed alcohol worth more than RM100,000. Region 1 commander Asst Comm Rusley Chi Ari said the duo was held during an operation with North Seberang Prai police headquarters in the Tasek Gelugor area from Sunday to Monday (May 25 to 26). "Based on intelligence about the distribution of alcoholic drinks in the North Seberang Prai district, Penang's Marine Intelligence Unit raided an unregistered warehouse in Kampung Selamat, Tasek Gelugor on Monday," he said in a statement on Tuesday (May 27). He said police seized 110 cartons of beverages with 12% alcohol content, 50 cartons of beer with 13.8% alcohol, and a remote control device believed to be linked to operations at the premises. He said the overall value of the confiscated goods, inclusive of tax, is RM103,804.80. "The suspects, a 58-year-old local and a 36-year-old foreign national, have been remanded until June 3 to assist in the investigation," he said. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: Port Klang marine police yesterday foiled a man's attempt to transport untaxed alcohol in a school van with the arrest of the suspect at Taman Sri Gadong. Marine police Region 1 commander Rusley Chi Ari said the 26-year-old suspect was apprehended in Klang as he was transferring the alcoholic beverages from a lorry into the van, Berita Harian reported. 'Upon inspection, officers discovered 56 boxes and 30 crates of various brands of liquor, believed to be untaxed, stored in the lorry and van. 'The seized items are estimated to be worth RM10,664.40, with unpaid duties amounting to RM36,889.57,' Rusley said in a statement today. He added that the vehicles involved, worth RM70,000, brought the total value of the seizure to RM117,553.97. Rusley said the suspect and seized items were taken to the Port Klang marine police headquarters for further action. Man in Klang busted using school van to smuggle untaxed booze
PETALING JAYA: A 26-year-old man was caught using a school van to transport untaxed alcohol during a raid at a parking lot in Taman Sri Gadong yesterday. During the noon raid, the Marine Intelligence Unit of the Marine Police Force (PPM) Port Klang inspected a lorry and a school van at the scene. Officers found 56 boxes and 30 crates of various alcoholic beverages believed to be untaxed, worth RM10,664.40, with an estimated tax value of RM36,889.57. 'The vehicles seized are valued at RM70,000, bringing the total value of the confiscation to RM117,553.97. 'The suspect and the seized items were brought to the PPM Port Klang base for further action,' he said in a statement today. The suspect, who admitted to being part of a distribution network operating in Klang, is now under investigation. 'The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, Section 74 of the Excise Act 1976, and the Road Transport Act 1987,' he stated.
