Two Middle East-related protests to be held in central London on Saturday

Protesters are set to rally at two high-profile demonstrations in central London on Saturday over flaring conflicts in the Middle East, the Metropolitan Police said. A protest organised by groups under the Palestine Coalition banner will gather in Russell Square from 12pm, before marching to Whitehall via Aldwych and the Strand for an assembly outside Downing Street. Former Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf, former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and musician Paloma Faith are among those set to give speeches at the assembly. Meanwhile, a static counter-protest organised by pro-Israeli group Stop The Hate will be held at the same time just north of Waterloo Bridge at the junction with the Strand. The group said it would meet at the location from 12.30pm onwards. Police have set out conditions for the first protest under the Public Order Act which demands that any person taking part in the procession must remain within Russell Square ahead of the protest and must not deviate from its specified route. Demonstrators must then stay in a specified part of Whitehall for the assembly, which must finish by 5.30pm, the force said. The Palestine Coalition is comprised of a number of different groups, including the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) and Stop The War. Stop The War said in an advertisement for the event on its website: 'Israel's attacks on Gaza and the West Bank are intensifying. Their starvation policy continues. And now Israel attacks on Iran seem intended to lead us into a full-scale war in the Middle East. 'The UK Government has at last accepted that Israel's actions in Gaza are unconscionable. Now they must act – words are not enough.' Discussions are ongoing regarding possible conditions for the Stop The Hate protest, the Met said. In a post on X, Stop The Hate said: 'Our families in Israel are under attack: standing bravely in the face of threats and ballistic missiles, whilst the people of Iran are bravely facing down their totalitarian government — now it's our turn to stand proudly in solidarity with them.' The demonstrations come after reports on Friday that the Home Secretary will ban Palestine Action after the group vandalised two aircraft at RAF Brize Norton. Yvette Cooper has decided to proscribe the group, making it a criminal offence to belong to or support Palestine Action, after footage posted online showed two people inside the RAF base, with one appearing to spray paint into an aircraft's jet engine. PSC described the move on social media as 'outrageous', while the Campaign Against Antisemitism welcomed the news, saying: 'Nobody should be surprised that those who vandalised Jewish premises with impunity have now been emboldened to sabotage RAF jets.'

A five-star London hotel is selling rooms at the same price as when it opened in 1900 - but you've got to be quick

To mark its 125th anniversary, one of London 's most iconic hotels is selling its rooms at the same price as they were when it opened - but you need to act fast. Originally opened in 1900, the Kimpton Fitzroy is a five-star hotel that overlooks Russell Square in central London. As part of a one-of-a-kind-offer, guests will be able to book a room at the same price it would have cost punters at the turn of the 20th century - just seven shillings and sixpence, the equivalent of £50 today. One night in a double room at the luxury hotel typically costs around £288. Only 125 rooms are included in the deal and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis from 10am on June 2 exclusively via the hotel's website. The Kimpton Fitzroy, previously known as the Hotel Russell, is located in a Grade II listed building with a grand terracotta façade, marble staircases and an opulent ballroom. It was the brainchild of architect Charles Fitzroy Doll, famed for designing the first class dining room onboard the RMS Titanic. Indeed, the Kimpton Fitzroy's own dining room, now Fitz's Brasserie, is an exact replica. The phrase 'all dolled up' is often linked to architect Doll, known for his opulent and highly decorative design style. His work is thought to have inspired the expression, reflecting the lavish embellishment associated with being dressed up. When the Kimpton Fitzroy opened in 1900, the hotel was also one of the first in the city to offer en suite bathrooms and electric lighting in every room - both hallmarks of innovation at the time. Much of its original character endures today - from the intricate mosaic floor in the lobby to its legendary bronze dragon, Lucky George, who has stood watch on the second floor since day one. Commissioned by Doll, an identical dragon was placed aboard the Titanic and ultimately sank with the ship. Legend has it that if you rub Lucky George's head and make a wish, good luck will come to you. The grand entrance to the hotel still houses the original floors and marbled walls. In the entrance is an intricate zodiac-inspired mosaic with a focal point of a winking sun. The floor encapsulates the Victorian era's fascination with astrology and mysticism. Adding to its historical significance, the home of Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst was on the site where the Kimpton Fitzroy Hotel now stands on the east side of Russell Square. Eagle-eyed guests will spot a commemorative plaque on the side of the building in Bernard Street. 'This anniversary offer celebrates more than just a milestone, a spokesperson for the Kimpton Fitzroy said, 'it invites guests to experience a piece of London's history at the price it all began.' Only 125 rooms will be available to book at the original 1900 price of seven shillings and sixpence (approximately £50 today), from 10am on June 2, 2025 exclusively via Rooms will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis until they're sold out. One room bookable per person only. Stays must be used within 12 months of booking date. Blackout dates apply.

Russell Square and Jackson Square Properties begin Delta Shores construction

Real-estate developers Russell Square and Jackson Square Properties have commenced the construction of Delta Shores, a new multifamily housing development in Sacramento, California, US. The development, which will include 576 units, is located near Interstate 5 and the Delta Shores retail centre, offering future residents access to shopping, dining, and entertainment amenities and regional connectivity. The project's construction began last month and is expected to reach completion by late 2026. Spanning 900,000ft², the Delta Shores development will house 21 residential buildings of three to four storeys, designed in a transitional contemporary style. Its design will include pitched roofs, complemented by flat-roofed bays with a ceramic tile finish. The project will also include two clubhouses, all reflecting the same modern aesthetic. Among the site's planned facilities are a resort-style pool, a fitness centre, a dog park, bike storage, and a golf simulator. Russell Square vice-president Andrew Schuurs said: 'Delta Shores is a natural fit for our approach - building thoughtfully designed communities in areas primed for long-term demand. 'We're bringing high-quality rental housing to a location that balances convenience, amenities, and accessibility.' Delta Shores is part of a larger master-planned community that stretches across 800 acres and will accommodate more than 4,900 residential units alongside 1.3 million square feet of retail space. Serving as the general contractor, Russell Square is set to deliver this integrated community within California's multifamily sector. In July 2024, Sacramento International Airport awarded a $30m contract to Parsons and Vanir for construction management and inspection services under its SMForward programme. The five-year contract was granted by the Sacramento County Department of Airports.
