Second round of Russia-Ukraine peace talks: Live Updates
The second round of Russia-Ukraine peace talks begins in Istanbul, Türkiye, on Monday, on the heels of a fresh wave of dual UAV and missile strikes. Kiev has intensified drone attacks on Russian territory, targeting civilian infrastructure, trains, and military airfields, which Moscow claims are attempts to sabotage negotiations. Just a day before scheduled talks, two bridges collapsed in Russia's Bryansk and Kursk border regions, leading to at least seven deaths and dozens of injured. The incidents were caused by sabotage, according to Russia's Investigative Committee. Later that same day, drones targeted military airfields in Murmansk Region in the country's north, in Ivanovo and Ryazan regions in western Russia, and in Irkutsk Region in Siberia and Amur Region in the Far East. In response to Kiev's raids, Russia has launched several retaliatory strikes targeting Ukraine's defense industry facilities, as well as military assembly points and warehouses. Some military bloggers and analysts suggest that Kiev may have undertaken such actions to demonstrate to its Western supporters that it still has the means to continue fighting Russia, as well as to intimidate the Russian population. On Sunday afternoon, Russia's delegation, led by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, arrived in Istanbul. Ukraine's team for the meeting is headed by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. According to Reuters, the delegation from Kiev will propose a 30-day ceasefire, prisoner exchanges (the 'all for all'principle), and the return of Ukrainian children from Russian-held areas, aiming for an eventual meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky. The previous round of Istanbul talks on May 16, the first since 2022, saw 1,000 prisoners exchanged per side. Both parties agreed to draft ceasefire proposals for today's discussion. Last week, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov clarified that Putin is open to holding high-level direct talks with Kiev. However, he said this should be preceded by tangible progress in the current negotiations.

‘I'll meet you in Turkey', Trump tells Putin in bombshell offer to bring Russian tyrant to table for Ukraine peace talks
DONALD Trump has said he could go to Turkey to attend Russia-Ukraine peace talks - but says he is not sure if Vladimir Putin is going to come. Russian President Vladimir Putin last week proposed to hold direct talks with Ukraine on Thursday May 15 - but has since gone silent on his offer. 5 5 5 5 5 Speaking today to reporters onboard Air Force One, Trump said: "[Putin] would like me to be there, and that's a possibility. "I don't know that he would be there if I'm not there. We're going to find out. " He has said he may visit Turkey for the talks as part of his trip to the Middle East this week. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday said he is willing to go to Turkey but only if Putin was also there. The Kremlin has not yet responded if Putin plans to go to Turkey, but confirmed a delegation would visit Istanbul for peace talks. It comes after Trump met Syrian President and former al-Qaeda jihadi Ahmed al-Sharaa on day two of his Middle East tour. He said he would lift "criplling" sanctions that the Americans put on Syria 50 years ago - but demanded al-Sharaa to flush out foreign terrorists from the country to help US fight against jihadi ISIS. It marks the first meeting between the US and Syria in 25 years. Trump argued lifting the sanctions from Syria would give the country a "chance at greatness" after a century of brutal rule by the Assad family. Ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad fled his country after al-Sharaa's lightning rebel offensive in December, ending the 24-year regime and paving the way for a new government. Trump is currently in the Middle East as part of his first major tour since taking over the Oval Office. He is now in Qatar for a state visit. It comes one day after Don inked the biggest arms deal in history to supply Saudi Arabia with $142bn worth of weapons, the White House said. The sale is part of a landmark $600 billion deal with Jeddah that was signed after Trump landed in Riyadh to kickstart his Middle East tour on Tuesday. The President has also taken a shot at rival Iran in a marquee speech, saying the Islamic Republic needed to make up its mind about whether it wanted to chase developing a nuclear weapon and get war or choose peace and a trading relationship. It marks Trump's first state visit of his second administration, after Saudi Arabia was also the first state visit in 2016.
