At least seven dead after Russian bridge collapses onto train
At least seven people have died after a highway bridge collapsed in a region close to the Ukraine border, according to Russian emergency services. The bridge in Bryansk brought down several heavy trucks onto a moving passenger train, with 30 people, including two children, also reportedly injured. The Russian Emergencies Ministry said fire and rescue units were attempting to find people who had been travelling on the train. In a statement posted to Telegram, Moscow Railway alleged the bridge had collapsed "as a result of illegal interference in transport operations". "Unfortunately, there are seven fatalities," local governor Alexander Bogomaz said on Telegram, adding two people - including a child - are "seriously injured". All casualties have been taken to medical facilities in the Bryansk region, he added. Moscow's interregional transport prosecutor's office said an investigation had been launched. Additional emergency workers, as well as rescue equipment and light towers for carrying out work at night have been sent to the area, according to Russian news agency Tass. Pictures online showed mangled carriages and passengers helping each other climb out of the wreckage in the dark. The incident took place about 100km (62 miles) from the Ukraine border.

Three blasts rock Moscow business district as car explodes in shopping mall car park
Three loud explosions were heard at a Moscow shopping mall in the central business district after a vehicle reportedly exploded in the car park. Videos posted by various Russian media outlets showed black smoke billowing among the district's skyscrapers on the banks of the Moskva River. The cause of the explosion and whether anyone was in the vehicle at the time is unclear, with media reports suggesting it could have been a car explosion or a fuel cylinder accident. Emergency services have now put out the ensuing fire. But the SHOT news outlet have reported that the three loud explosions heard were due to fuel cylinders that exploded under 'strong pressure'. Authorities are investigating the explosions, but initial reports say they aren't ruling out sabotage or terrorism. The underground parking lot where the explosion took place is in the Moscow City business district. The incident took place just a day after a blast occurred at a Russian ammunition depot east of Moscow. Russia's military blamed the blast on ammunition which had detonated after the storage building caught fire due to a "violation of safety requirements". There were no casulaties in the incident, but the site is believed to be a key ammunition storage site for the Russian army. 'The Main Directorate of the Russian Emergencies Ministry for the city of Moscow received a message about a fire on Presnenskaya Embankment,' the Ministry of Emergency Situations said after the initial explosion. 'A car is burning in the underground parking lot of an administrative building.' Moscow has been targeted by car bombings and attacks since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. In late 2022, a car bombing just outside of Moscow killed ultranationalist Russian Darya Dugina, the daughter of a Putin ally.

Watch: Russian rescues 139 fishermen who refused to leave iceberg without a catch
Credit: Russian Emergencies Ministry A Russian emergency operation rescued 139 stranded fishermen who had initially refused help because they had not caught any fish. The group drifted over a mile out to sea after the ice sheet they were standing on broke away from the shore of the remote far-eastern Sakhalin island on Wednesday. An airlift rescue operation was launched with a helicopter and a hovercraft, but it appeared at least some of those trapped were reluctant to be taken off the ice. Officials said the fisherman refused to leave 'under any circumstances' until they had caught some fish. They were heard in footage arguing with rescuers and refusing to get in the helicopter. The men were eventually rescued and were seen shielding themselves from the wind as they boarded the Mil Mi-8 helicopter. Mikhail, one of the fishermen rescued, told Russian media many were worried about losing their equipment. He said the group 'came to fish' and believed they would be saved eventually, or that new ice would form and they would be able to walk away. The incident was reportedly the result of a 33ft crack of ice that appeared suddenly near the village of Malki. Some fisherman managed to escape immediately by jumping over the crevice before it became too wide. It was unclear why so many fishermen had gathered at the remote location but emergency services had said 'some extreme sports enthusiasts' were among the group. Rescuers said residents had been warned about setting foot on the ice by authorities as cracks were expected this week. The region has seen similar incidents before. In 2020, Russian state media reported a group of over 500 fishermen had to be saved from an ice floe that had drifted out to sea. In February 2024, at least 80 fishermen had to be rescued from a floating ice sheet near the village of Starodubskoye. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism.
