What caused the rumor to spread fast was that the Libyan military leader had not appeared following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin. An X user posted a photo of the Libyan strongman and wrote: "Unconfirmed reports indicate that Khalifa Haftar died at the age of 83 in a Moscow hospital after suffering a stroke.
