Chechnya leader's son, 17, becomes head of Chechen security council

REUTERS/Chingis Kondarov/File Photo (Reuters) - The teenage son of Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Russia's Chechnya region and close ally of President Vladimir Putin, has been appointed secretary of the region's security council, according to the council's Telegram channel. Adam Kadyrov turned 17 in November 2024. It is the fourth time he has been appointed to an official position since 2023, when he was 15. He already serves as his father's top bodyguard, a trustee of Chechnya's Special Forces University, and an observer in a new army battalion. Ramzan Kadyrov has led Chechnya, a mountainous Muslim region in southern Russia that tried to break away from Moscow in wars that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union, since 2007. He enjoys wide leeway from Putin to run Chechnya as his personal fiefdom in return for ensuring the stability of the region, where an Islamist, anti-Russian insurgency continued for around a decade after the end of full-scale conflict there in the early 2000s. His rise to power came after his own father, Akhmat, was killed in a 2004 bombing by insurgents who saw him as a turncoat. In September 2023, Adam Kadyrov was shown, in a video posted by his father on social media, beating a detainee accused of burning the Koran. Ramzan Kadyrov said he was proud of his son for defending his Muslim religion. The detainee, Nikita Zhuravel, has since been sentenced to three and a half years in prison. Police serves Russian soldier who abducted and raped teenage girls in Mykolaiv Oblast with notice of suspicion
Ukrainian law enforcement officers have identified a Russian soldier who abducted and raped teen girls aged 13 and 15 during the occupation of Mykolaiv Oblast. He is a 26-year-old native of Russia's Stavropol Krai who voluntarily joined the ranks of the Akhmat special operations unit. Source: National Police of Ukraine Details: According to the investigation, the man was trained at the Russian University of Special Forces in Chechnya and came to fight in Ukraine. On 19 March 2022, the man, together with other Russian military personnel, seized the Snihurivka hromada in Mykolaiv Oblast [a hromada is an administrative unit designating a village, several villages, or a town, and their adjacent territories – ed.]. They began to intimidate, rob, beat and torture the local residents. Investigators found that the man illegally broke into one of the abandoned apartments of a Ukrainian soldier who was defending Ukraine. He then kidnapped and brought two underage girls to the seized home, threatening them with weapons. For three days, the perpetrator raped and intimidated the children. He also found out that the mother of one of the girls was a military officer who was in captivity, and he beat the child for this. On the third day, the girls were lucky to escape through a window when the soldier was not in the apartment. Soon, regular Russian troops began to retreat. The special unit fled with them. After the liberation, the police investigators began to document the crimes of the Russians and, with the help of specialists from Ukraine's Defence Intelligence, identified the rapist. He was served with a notice of suspicion under Article 438.1 of the Criminal Code (violation of the laws and customs of war). He faces up to 10 years in prison. "The pre-trial investigation is ongoing. Police investigators are doing everything possible to identify all those involved in the offences committed by the Russians in the occupied territories," law enforcement officials said. Background: Earlier, Ukrainian law enforcement officers exposed a Russian soldier who kidnapped a 21-year-old woman from Kharkiv Oblast and brought her to Russia. The attacker held the Ukrainian woman captive, beat and raped her for over a year. Support Ukrainska Pravda on Patreon!
